I appreciate the tracert explanation. I have used this to great effect in the past and would have found some troubleshooting far more painful without it, but I never knew the mechanics beyond the used of ICMP.

Couldn't find anything for SY0-601, so I assume these commands are the same today? Because I remember quite a few of these from my CISCO classes (albeit it severely out of practice) and I'm trying refresh my mind for my Sec+ exam.

Quick question, if you can capture packets with a protocol analyzer or from the command line in which case would you use one over the other. I was wondering about this from a wireless standpoint as well. When would you use a wireless scanner to capture packets opposed to a protocol analyzer or does it matter?

What is the TTL of the returning packet with the "TTL Exceeded" message? Does that have the same number TTL as it received?

About tracert tool why did it return 2ms 1ms 1ms 4ms for each hop?
The second and third hops are further than the first why they have less ms value?

If we are on windows, how should we execute the mac equivalent "traceroute -q 1 8.8.8.8". I believe the -q is not recognized on windows when I type "tracert -q 1 8.8.8.8"
