I wouldn't mind supporting devs making a better layer out 3rd party app. The problem is that reddit doesn't charge a flat rate for their api

platforms charging ridiculous prices for their apis, shutting down sites like these, is textbook monopolistic practices

This tells me to be a backend dev, because what really matters is the content and data.

That's what CSS was originally designed to do. The "cascading" was supposed to let you write your personal local CSS as the final override. Dark mode on a light site? Just override a few CSS parms. But it failed because so many web sites developed complex schemes of their own which were difficult to tweak.

if calling their api does't show ads, don't collect data or monetise that mean they fucked up their api, for exemple redit: they CAN show ads but for some reason they don't

You don't need APIs if you can just scrape their websites😎

Not so much whether I think it is fair; the question the companies need to answer is what value do they provide users on their own? YouTube, Reddit, and Twitter all rely on user-generated content. Harass the users and make their lives more miserable and maybe they don't upload as much - meaning, what is going to cause folks to COME to those platforms after this? Not that I think it exists, but an API from UPS that shows when a package is going to be delivered can survive without third party support; they have a business model and that data would still exist if everyone stopped using the API, as folks would still be shipping packages. But remove an easy way to read and interact with Reddit? Maybe a fraction of those folks stop posting, leading to less engagement, and reduced reason for other users to visit and react. Remember, social media platforms are based on the network effect. That allowed them to grow to massive size, but can also lead them to suffer a quick death if folks move on!

Recently started learning C for my college..trust me the process is hard in the start but in the end it feels so relaxing to see your code working😂❤

I think a rise in userscripts might happen with Reddit's (and others') API pricing changes. A custom experience, given that the websites aren't updated in the UI all that much. Plus, anybody can make their own tweaks here too.

I love the front ends, dont get me wrong. I used infinity, not just because of the ads, I used it because it looked 1000x better the the official reddit app.

But,

The issue and this (should be a wake up call) is that frontends are just a band aid solution. At anytime they can do what reddit is doing.

We just need better privacy regulations/respecting policies.

Or move to more private respecting services.

Those companies would eventually kill themselves and be replaced by decentralized solutions. We are still far from there, and decentralized apps that exist now are mostly unusable or just aren't on par with service provided by companies, but this gap is slowly closing

I wish Discord would allow these apps, because the Discord app is completly unusable

I still don't understand why the API cannot handle advertisements or anything like that, like why can't there be an API that lets people change the front end of their favorite website but the company running the websites can still make money off advertisements and train their algorithms and such. It doesn't make sense to me why using an API is mutually exclusive to a company making money.

Reddit's kinda a bad example, most repos went private after the api calls prices announced

You are doing an amazing job with your videos!😍✌ Thank you for putting in the time and effort to create such a valuable resource.

The only way to progress is exploration and experimentation.

I think for Reddit and Twitter to intensionally rise the API prices is kinda mean and greedy. Their killing off fan favourite clients for those apps and this might also backfire.

reddit needs a really good alternative

a lot of open source alternatives to things like YouTube have already been taken down from cease and desist orders and threats to sue. Things like pipetube and newpipe come to mind
