Even Beethoven Had Licks! How To Make Other Peoples Licks Your Own

In this episode I take a great "lick" from Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto and make it my own. I will show you how to play Beethoven's and then how I change it into a modern 21st century lick.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Piano Concerto No.4 was composed in 1805-1806 and has 3 movements. The melodic idea that I am discussing is in the 1st movement and about 3:30 into the piece.

I’ve been listening to Beethoven for over thirty years and I swear there seems to be no end to “new” material and motifs/licks that jump out at you that you never fully considered before.
Dude was an absolute genius.

Beethoven's music has always been my biggest inspiration when it comes to composing original music. Out of all the great composers his music always seems to move the most emotionally.

Before he became deaf, Beethoven was known throughout the musical community in Europe as the greatest improvisor. They used to have competitions.

A reference book of licks from classical composers from different eras might be kind of cool

This is one of the reasons I subscribe to your channel: You explore good music, regardless of genre.

He has a lick in Moonlight Sonata mvt 1 too. Toward the middle or 2/3 of the piece, where he goes up on the different diminished chords and back down... My favorite part of that piece by the way. He was so wonderful.

This reminds me of how I like to call Handel, "the Great-Grandfather of Remixing". He would be considered a remixer today (he was known to take the melodies of others and put his own spin on them). He was also a great composer himself and had a nice Baroque style that's very influential.

Chopin and Paganini are good examples of classical composers who used licks a lot. I really enjoy your channel/lessons and find them both useful and interesting.

I often like to use motivs from Bach or Beethoven works in my soloing. You would be amaze at how many good licks are hidden in Bach`s fugues and invention, aswell as in Beethoven´s sonatas.

That's why music is timeless. Nothing is ever invented. It is just borrowed and modified, forever.

My favorite lesser known Beethoven melodies: piano sonata 15 rondo, piano sonata 23 andante, and the king stephen overture. Also, love the John Field piano concertos. Interesting idea to hear these rearranged with some modern vst sounds. Great vid!

This is such a cool consept for a series! I love your stuff! I hope you keep up your series, a friendly critisism;
You make such great content and show great insight in such broad aspects of music, however, you kinda starts off a series, and make a part one, but then we never see much more of it. Do you plan to continue the series that you've begun?

Great work Rick!

I read that he used to improvise over other composers' themes in competitions, and was so good at it that it sounded as if he was playing a written piece of his own. Freakin' played those fools under the piano!
