Many websites provide guidance on legal topics. For example, the Ministry of Attorney General of Ontario has many websites that explain how the court procedure works. Law firms has articles that give insight to specific legal issues. When a layperson sees content related to legal topics which is very helpful, they may well describe it in every day language as "legal advice". However, legally speaking, "legal advice" has very specific meaning. Legal advice can only be provided by qualified and licensed professionals. This is why these websites usually have a warning that goes something like this: "We are only providing 'legal information', NOT 'legal advice'!" Content on websites that provide general information is "legal information". Join us in this video series, as Heather Hui-Litwin and Helena Birt talks about the difference between "legal information" and "legal advice".
This video is Part 1, which explains what "legal information" is. Part 2 will be on "legal advice."
