Like idioms, English euphemisms are figurative in meaning. We use them to soften uncomfortable topics, such as aging, politics, money, and more.

If you've ever wondered, 'what are euphemisms,' this lesson will help. You'll learn 20 common euphemisms to describe people and aging. And a clear understanding of euphemisms vs. idioms.

For example, we might describe someone as
- over the hill
- well-seasoned
- a late bloomer
- a wallflower

In each case, the euphemism is used as a more polite way to refer to a sensitive topic or trait.

Given that euphemisms don’t rely on their literal meanings but rely on a common, shared understanding of the meaning, they can be a challenge to decode.

With this Confident English lesson, you’ll be able to understand
and easily use common English euphemisms in conversations about aging and describing people.

Great job. Just a quick suggestion: it would be very helpful if you have one slide at the end of the video for the summary so we can take a screenshot and remember it otherwise they all get forgotten.

I love to be direct and open rather than be economical with the truth 👍

Even though there may be some snow on the roof, I know the latest trends
In college my roommate had a bit eccentric way of solving problems
By the time she finishes doing her makeup we´ll be six feet under

Again, a lovely lesson, Annemarie. I believe sometimes it's better to bend the truth or be economical with the truth because not everyone can manage with it. As we tend to say in my country "truth hurts".
Paraphrased sentences:
1. Even though I have some snow on the roof, I know the latest trends.
2. In college, my roommate was free-spirited and had some eccentric ways of solving problems.
3. By the time she finishes doing her makeup, we'll all be six feet under.

I'm a wallflower, but I don't believe it's ok to not give full truth what ever the reason may be behind. I am not standing high in my account.❤❤❤❤❤

No clue how this got suggested, but I learned something new. I’ve never heard “snow on the roof” as a midwesterner. Is that said in a specific region?

Hello, Annemarie. Thank you for sharing this important topic on how to speak more politely on some sensitive issues such as death and aging.. Btw, I am an English teacher in Indonesia, and one of the topics covered in my syllabus is describing people. I am wondering whether it is polite to describe someone as being bald and fat. Do English has more polite words or expression for those two words?

Could you please make a video about a conversation with a service company? For example, if your washing machine is not working and you need to call customer service and book a technician. I wonder what phrases native speakers use for these phone calls.
