My personal take is that he knew everything from the beginning and the role he had to play for humanity to survive and ascend. The pain he endures on the Golden Throne is endured willingly and is all part of the journey of humanity. He accepts the pain, knowing what comes next. The Future is already written, but mortals only see it happening by the passing of Time, not knowing what is in stock for them. It gives their life meaning.

The so called "emperor" is nth but a weapon created by the old ones in a subtle way.. that highly advanced knowledge was given to the shamans in the form of a vision and the ritual they conducted which they knew nth about help the old ones shape the entity into the form that is what is know as the emperor... A deceiver with many faces whose ultimately goal is sth that is not yet truly known. Personally I think it’s partly due to ego and hubris. Thinking the Emperor can weather anything or change the course of things. After all, the Emperor can make mistakes as well, like other deities.
