Then "MR" Mercruiser Redesigned where the lower shaft was changed to not have the pin also the exterior of the whole drive got a makeover. Later it became The Alpha one then in 1991 after another redesign they produced the "Alpha one Gen 2 " that is still produced to date.

Can I swap an Alpha One v6 in place of a pre-Alpha MC-1 4 cyl.?
Note: The spline shaft on the Alpha One is longer(need to swap out for shorter shaft).

Is there any way to tell year of Alpha One Gen 1 from the stamped outdrive serial number? My S/N is 0C685074.

There is no such drive as a 'pre-alpha'. That was a name made up by some idiot on boats dot net (I think). All that 'pre-alpha means is 'before Alpha', and no less than 14 drives came before the Alpha One. Also, that top housing you showed, was used on drives R, MR and Alpha one. Once the lower housing is off, there is no way to know what the drive is. And the Alpha One and MR drives are identical. The only difference is the marketing name.

Will the pre alpha lower bolt to the upper gen 1 if one would cut off the top pin? Seems to set down fine but it sticks up about 1/2 inch because of the pin.

There were 14 'pre-Alpha' drives (before the Alpha One drive, 1986 to 1991). These also include the 1-R (1983-1984) and MR (1985) drives, which externally can not be differentiated from an Alpha One. The drive with the lifting eye on the top cover and the ridges on the housing is an MC-1 drive (1969 to 1982). Mercury NEVER made a drive called 'PreAlpha'.... The information in the video is incomplete.

Yeah, you could use vids like this and maybe get it right, maybe not...or simply use the serial number and eliminate the guessing
