Mercruiser Outdrive Identification -- Alpha Gen 1, Gen 2, and Bravo

This is a quick video I made showing how to tell the difference between Alpha One Gen 1, Alpha One Gen 2, and Bravo Mercruiser Outdrives. Obviously there are many more outdrives (brand and model) than the ones mentioned in this video, but this helps when shopping for boats and also when you start doing your own repairs and need to order parts. Mercruiser service manuals sort their repair procedures using this identification method as well. Leave a comment or like if you found this video helpful!

Quick and informative! I’m a younger guy trying to fix up a 2002 alumaweld intruder on my own and this video helped me a lot.

One other visual cue between Gen 1 and Gen 2 lower units are the 4 mounting bolts are visible on the Gen 2 and not visible on the Gen 1....Also, Gen 1 has a removable plastic insert on the water intake and the Gen 2 does not.

Can you explain if Alpha 1 Gen 2 drives from differing serial number ranges are interchangeable? For example, I have a 2007 that needs a whole drive assembly due to an accident, including the gimbal mount and bell housing. I know the gear ratios are different but are the housings the same? Could I use an older gen 2 and install the correct gears?

great video - thanks for sharing - how do you determine the gear ratio or your outdrive?
