What Is Asperger's Syndrome? | Child Psychology

So Asperger's disorder, or Asperger syndrome, is one of the clinical disorders under the category of pervasive developmental disorder. Children with Asperger syndrome do have difficulties with social communication and some higher level aspects of language. But typically, they're considered very bright and intelligent children and do have a great mastery of day-to-day language skills.

One thing that sets children with Asperger's disorder aside from other children with PDD diagnoses is that these children have restricted ranges of interests, very special interests that, sometimes, can be in the form of a high interest in trains, or sports scores or something of unique interest to them.

Children with Asperger's disorder, definitely, have high prognostic qualities because they tend to do very well in school. Professionally, they usually do much better in situations where they can work kind of in a one-to-one setting and don't have to have a lot of social interactions.

Children with Asperger syndrome are unique, but these are the signs and behaviors you'll see in children with Asperger syndrome.

I am 28 and was diagnosed with Aspergers before you referred to it as ASD and before it was directly linked to Autism. I was diagnosed as a child after staying in a home for children with behavioral problems. Me and my family knew nothing about it, and I only knew the basics until about a year ago. So much of what I have learned describes how I am as a person and how much I suffer in my head. I could go on but ill keep it short. This video is a very good description of somebody with AS.

I was diagnosed at 4 with PDD-NOS but the doctor said it would turn more into Aspregers as I got older, which he was right, My obsessions that I have is with Astronomy: Star Wars/Trek, Planets, Black holes, Space Ships you name it, another obsession I have is with Politics, such as researching past elections and looking at voting patterns to as far back as the 1790's. I do have a very hard time socially, I can get very anxious in social settings like a school dance or a party, also loud noises really seem to bother me and I tend to get very stressed at places like concerts or PEP Assembly's, I also get very irritated and anxious when people touch me such as poking or people giving me pats on the back etc. Also I have a hard time on picking up social ques such as when I am talking to someone it is hard to tell if they are getting bored or annoyed when I talk. But I am very good in Math and Science, I got a 98% in chemistry and a 95% in Advanced Algebra. So it has been hard in some areas but I can overcome them with help. I have come a long way, I am 16 and a straight A student, and have a few really good friends.

How can you get tested for asperger's without having to pay $2, 500 like a place called UIC near me is requiring. There is a high probability that I have this condition.

Do kids with Asperger’s use glitter sensory bottles for calming down?

I agree with you mate. I did well at school because I loved the harmony of set in stone knowledge away from the chaotic world around it, however, the pressures of peers led me very astray because I just wanted acceptance.

I'm 19, almost 20, and I have also been diagnosed with Asperger's. I was 1st diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum @ age 2 1/2, but I wasn't originally Asperger Syndrome, though, I was PDD-NOS (I don't know if that was because it was 2 early on 2 tell where I was on the spectrum or what). And I was rediagnosed as Asperger's @ almost 16 cuz although I did have anough signs of Autism, I had never had a speech or cognitive delay, nor had I ever lost either of those functions.

0:19 You mean as in sarcasm and metaphors? Which can be true but alot of children with Asperger's learn how to use them from an intellectual standpoint as they grow up but it is harder to learn it compared to how NT children already have an intuitive sense for it. Alot of us love to be sarcastic like me for example.

I do wish she'd stop using the word "disorder".

hans asperger was an Austrian person, the pronunciation should be in (lower) german. so not like hamburger.
