New Alzheimers med approved? But is it worth the cost?

So last week the FDA put out approval for a new Alzheimer's medication call aduhelm (adacanumab). There are a lot of questions about this because the evidence is not overwhelming but we don't really have a lot of good options for treating Alzheimer's. It's expensive and requires infusions as opposed to tablets, there are risks of brain swelling and minor brain bleeds showing on the images required to track progress of the medicine. There are a lot of things to consider. We'll talk about them in this video.

A lot of things to think about with this one. Take some time and read through the links in the description if you want some more information and share your thoughts below. What do you think about this?

Hey Dr. Bland! I just made a video about this new treatment as well (last week). Proud to be your 100th subscriber. Keep up the great work, and make more videos about neurology (I'm totally not biased or anything like that)! :P

Doc wouldn't it be more prudent to have more trials on the drug before it goes on sale particularly considering the prohibitively high costs? In essence it feels like one has to pay a fortune to be a beta tester for the drug!

Yeah, I dunno if this sounds convincing enough to me. I don’t think I’d feel comfortable doing these treatments or having a loved one do them. On a somewhat similar note, what are your thoughts on Plaquenil? Not necessarily for the pandemic, but in general. I found out I might have Sjogren’s, and am wondering what treatments are available, and that seems to be the main one. I keep getting a lot of fear-mongering about it though, like it “destroys your body” and of course the long term use blindness risk (which I guess is really only like a 1% risk?). What are the benefits from it vs the cons? Most things I find online just basically say it’s safe and to take with food because it can cause GI upset, but that’s about it haha. The harsh stuff I’ve heard about it has been from other people.
