How to plant pond plants

The most common question I get when it comes to potting pond plants is should they go into gravel or soil. My personal preference is to plant all water marginals, annuals, trailing and submerged plants into grave. Generally Things like lotus and water lilies will perform much better in soil. Hope this video helps you decide how to plant your water plants.

Thanks for a really straightforward answer on this because I've been through a few "yeah well sort of maybe but" Youtube videos!

Following your advice, I washed off the soil from the bog plants and popped them straight into the gravel in the bog filter... I got trailing creeping jenny (I'm in England). They look happy there and I'm looking forward to watching them grow. Thanks for your help! 🙂

Can you please do a winter video about the state of the pond? I’m really curious which plants will survive. We have similar sub tropical temperatures here. Lowest is around 1 deg C.

I've just made my Aquascape pond from the remains of my previous pond. My previous pond and shallow bog were ruined by plants I could not control. The irises spread rapidly all over the bog. I could pull them out at first but it became increasingly difficult to do so because their roots actually grew through the liner. I ended up having to hire a mini-excavator to pull the whole bog out. The pond was ruined by bacopa. It just grew like crazy! I kept pully out handfuls but, a week or so later, it was all back with avengeance!
Can you please make a video (or even just a post) recommending some deep marginals (i.e. planted just under 30cm deep) that aren't so invasive and aggressive?
I'm in Adelaide so have a similar climate to you.)

Your channel is really awesome. Congratulations.
Just a question. I see your ponds don’t have any net over to protect against the predators. How do you deal with that.
Cheers

I’ve set up a patio micro-pond (in hopes it inspires a larger pond in the future). I’m currently experimenting with various plants from my aquarium. I would like to add a small water lily such as the Lil Sue. How much soil would you put in a small pot for a smaller species water lily?

What is the plant visible at the 1:00 mark? I've never seen that for sale anywhere near me but I like it a lot!

Your stuff is so useful, and clear as well filtered pond water. Have you done swimming ponds?

When you say “into the gravel” I’m a bit confused - our pond (that we inherited with our house) has a plastic pond liner at the bottom - do you add gravel on top of the liner and then plant the plants into the gravel? Or do you not have a liner? Sorry, probably a stupid question!

I live in Auckland NZ. My pond is lined and only about 2 and a half to 3 feet deep, so my water lily (top of the soil excluding gravel) is only 10cms from the surface and some storks are above water level. I have it in a 7.5ltr fabric pot with soil and aquatic mix topped with gravel. Will the fact that the lily is sitting quite shallow be detrimental to its growth??

I'm planning on back filling a small pond with gravel to a depth of only a couple of inches for child safety. I had the idea of housing a small pump in a concealed upturned, holed bucket to power a small waterfall and to plant in the shallow water/gravel. Have you any thoughts or tips on how to get the best from this please, or could you suggest a better solution?

Great information for this new koi pond owner. Beautiful, crystal clear water. Wow!

Any suggestions on plants that can tolerate quite a bit of shade that can be planted in gravel?
Also, what gravel works best in your experience?

Thank you!
