The centre has introduced a programme at the Delhi airport that aims to fast-track the immigration process. The programme can cut down the time taken for immigration from 30 minutes to mere seconds. It's called the Fast-Track Immigration Trusted Traveller Programme and has been introduced by the Ministry of Home Affairs. So how does this system work?

SO instead of waiting 30 min at immigration now you have to spend days to follow the paper work .. Well done Indian Government ...

How complicated the process is! More and more countries are adopting passport free immigration, India is adopting a process that includes a physical meeting with authorities to verify your identity before one can be enabled for automated gate immigration. Countries like Singapore recognise tourists carrying Indian passport on their e-gates but India can’t recognise its own passport unless you have a verification done before hand

I was at London Heathrow and Rome Fiumicino airport, you just scan your passport (not available to Indian passport holders) and you exit the airport, no need to see an agent.
It will take some time for India to get to this point. Some progress is better than none at all.

India introduces new taxes and tax liability rules almost every year and residency rules are changed sometimes.
Even by introducing steps like PAN Aadhar linking etc. new problems regarding proving non residency can arise, even when long settled.
It is best to have entry and exit stamps in the passport from Indian immigration.
It can become necessary even after 50 years in some cases, based on new rules to be introduced then.
The electronic gates, if they are recording and archiving the travel data for Indians and is available to citizens to download on demand from Indian Home/Finance ministry website, one can think differently.
There is no guarantee that such data will be possible to be downloaded when you need it.

Wait what? So fast-track means you need to apply 5 days before and meet in person? Like dude really? Why can't we move for making our Indian passports biometric and make it less paper works? And who the hell saw success in the airport? Like why?

For OCI cardholders living abroad, the process requires a personal visit to submit biometrics. Biometrics can be submitted at designated international airports in India or at a Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) during visits to India. Unfortunately, there are no provisions to submit biometrics from outside India at present. This scheme is just a joke played by India on overseas Indians.

These machines have been installed in Singapore Changi airports. I find that Perth airport also has the same system. For our immigration there, our in/out was done in 10 seconds. It is to be noted that we are foreigners for both the countries. They did not require pre-registration as demanded by India for face id etc. It looks like India is persuing old method and distinguishing Indians and foreigners.

Sure, just push the queue outside the airport and gather more sensitive data... Incapable to launch the e-passport which they have been promising since forever... Our home ministry is nothing short of a joke.

Tax authorities ask for passport stamp for verifying residency status. I assume one will be able to get a report from immigration bureau that will help establish travel dates for the purposes of ascertaining tax residency.
