This can be misleading. Yes, nuclei bounce off each other a lot during nuclear fusion, but that is because their kinetic energies have not reached a threshold to overcome the electrostatic potential barrier between them. This itself is NOT called nuclear fusion. The only event that qualifies as NUCLEAR FUSION is when two hydrogen nuclei come close enough so that their NUCLEAR STRONG forces are stronger than the repulsive force and the two nuclei fuse to become helium nucleus.

Yes, quantum tunneling HELPS to increase the rate of nuclear fusion as it is a probabilistic phenomenon whereby the two hydrogen nuclei can get close enough to fuse even though they didn't have enough kinetic energies to overcome the potential barrier. BUT nuclear fusion is NOT all quantum tunneling. Some of the hydrogen nuclei legitimately get enough kinetic energy to overcome the potential barrier.

There's a non-zero probability that a particle will appear on the other side of molecular wide barrier. As for solar fusion, there's a non-zero probability that two duterium nucleus of insufficient energy will still fuse to create helium+ energy/heat. So, when you consider how large the sun is, a star can ignite fusion even though its temperature is well below 100 mil° Kelvin. Thus, it occurs by chance and why such stars last for billions of years vis a vis large hot stars that last a couple hundred thousand years.

IT IS SAID, Though unlikely that,

Someday titles like quantum tunneling will change because that's not what is occurring. All matter has space between it. The case point on earth is fact that a stem of straw can pierce a Tele pump pole and still keep its structure. Do we call that quantum tunneling! Lol no because we only see it at the macro level. Two objects or multiple objects they coming contact with each other at a molecular level while vibrating creates more energy, then there's a chain reaction and hence we have objects called stars, our son, that is continually creating a Sunburst that we see from a vacuum. Without the volatility from the chemicals and heat in the sun we will not have that level of energy exchange.
