Cheers for the video man :) I've been wondering this for a long time.

Thanks for all the great info mate.

Had to pause it a couple of times, to keep up with the captions and commentary, but overall it answered a lot of questions I had.

Keep up the good work (looking forward to the next one).

Thanks Pat. For us lucky ones on FTTN, how about a video explaining some of the information from your modem. Max. throughput, Attainable throughput, Impulse Noise Protection, Signal to Noise ratio & Line attenuation. May explain why some get better speeds on copper than others considering how far they are from the Node. Cheers

When i was in NZ last April, the vdsl2 connection was downloading at 130mbps and uploading at 50mbps so I think Australia still got the raw end of the deal

Upload speeds for NBN plans is my current torch-bearing issue. As you said, most ISP's don't even mention upload speeds on their websites. I'm pretty angry that the NBN decided to change the 100/40 plan to 100/20, but at least there are a handful of ISP's that will still do 100/40.

With everyone working from home there's really no excuse for there not being consumer-level symmetrical plans - I know I'd pay for it. We shouldn't have to consider business NBN plans to get symmetrical NBN.

Love that sidenote animation at about the 5 minute mark.

Network operators pay more for data egress than ingress, people uploading data cost them a lot more than downloading, this is the main reason why you have low upload speed and why the 100/20 is cheaper than the 100/40. ADSL Annex M can support upload speed of 2.2mb's but this is generally only available on business plans

could you answer why nbn website gives dates for my nbn build then it says more work is needed, i live in a hfc area, and i believe we are being backfilled by greenfield? any thoughts as to why this happens?

Great video Pat on explaining the connections. Much appreciated ^^ Just wondering can you do a video about changing from FTTC to FTTP? the cost involved or what other things are needed for it? Like do you need a backup battery? or new modem and etc? Or is it worthwhile? Or would like connections such as FTTC or FTTN get future upgrades (Free) or higher speed like the HFC connections (which they say can reach up to 1Gbps). Also isnt HFC worse off than FTTC? but how come they can provide better speed? So doesnt that mean its better? 👍 Hope you can explain more about these kinda of things. Cheer Pat.

As you said the power of the modern but that’s by design to keep the chip cost in the CPE or modem and the cost of delivering the service down (not a big issue now but remember vDSL was ratified in 2008 and telcos make investments in the billions for years). That brings me onto the V or vectoring and the cable standard in Oz (22 to 26AWG) and impedance and how much loss or attention is allowed so people up to 1.6km away from the telco gear can get a service. In chip design it’s RGLC, anyway let’s get out of the weeds... but you need to modulate for the changing parameters. Fibre because it’s light doesn’t have these electrical constraints.

LOL was that an unofficial TPG plug with the Fibre400 and Fibre1000? You missed the Ten Gigabit fibre service though @ $698

My power is out no idea what it's for but I hope it's for nbn because I've been on 5 megabits download and 300 kbps upload I can't deal with this

Hey mate love your videos, but this one needs some work! There are actually good technical reasons why upload is lower than download on FTTP and HFC and to a lesser extent the DSL techs - it is not just the telcos trying to gouge more money out of business connections. Ping me to get the full low down!

Hi Pat, i am using iinet vdsl with Technicolor TG789vac v2 modem. My 5Ghz frequency is not stable, it drops out frequently especially when i use on my macbook air. Any recommendations?

Yeh. I get 80 down but 1.5 up. If both of us are playing ps4 and looking at things on youtube it doesn't work. Let alone friends on wifi

Half your luck, city livin has it's bonuses, whilst us in the country get SFA..ADSL2+ at standard speed is best we get here unless we pay through the nose for unreliable and under severely resourced Skymuster... unless you are a vampire the Skymuster limitations are totally unworkable.

I have 0.7 upload normally on ADSL2+, I have to lower my video quality to 720p 30 otherwise it takes forever to upload
