Being an American Abroad Right Now

A South African gal’s prospective on this ➡️ every country has problems and people abroad are excited to have the focus *not* on them, and they bring it up to distract themselves from their own country’s problems.

Still — it is crazy to me that people bring this up as a normal, casual conversation! (This has happened to me in Paris, too.)

AND, travel always has been and always will be inextricably linked with politics. I do acknowledge that it’s pretty normal to bring up current events when you meet people from other countries - it’s a way to connect and get a track perspective that might be different from the newspapers.

But this thread, this early, on this short of a drive… was notttt the (my) vibe 🥲
