Rule of thumb: If you’re on sand, you’re not on solid land. Sand is made from the tide over time, so don’t risk it. Glad you and your van were not harmed!

You all are so very lucky that someone woke you up to tell you that you were in danger. You all would have been swept away if not for that person. Please please, don’t park on a beach.

Man you gotta be careful driving a van in Mexico. As a Mexican, driving a van in a cartel-controlled zone can be extremely dangerous. Not just because of that beach situation, but also the current cartel situation is not seeming to get better. Be safe out there y’all.

Make sure to wash your van well bc the salt water will do absolute next level carnage

The fact that you all helped the other people who were stuck is so kind.

Excuse the military men at that particular check point. It is more common to have them throughly inspect as you travel North because drugs come in from the south on the route you were

Glad there were people helping each other out.

if that's the scariest thing to happen to you in Mexico, take it as a sign.

Can’t help but think, surely a little bit of research BEFORE parking on very flat land next to the ocean, might be a wise thing when travelling areas you’ve never been to before?

You are very lucky someone called you to notify you of the tide coming in, otherwise it could have been much worse. Be very careful in the future where you park

Y’all should pick up some traction recovery boards. Plastic boards you slide under the tires if you get stuck in snow/sand. Cost about $80

I live on the border in Nogales Arizona and can say with total certainty that you're crazy to be driving around Baja like you do. I have two friends that used to winter out in San Carlos and they poo pooded the violence threat as an over reaction until several years ago there was a rival gang shoot out in the parking lot of their condo while they were on the veranda having breakfast. They saw the whole thing including people being killed. They don't go there anymore. Maui is their new wintering hangout. This is just one of dozens of bad to very very bad situations that happen in Mexico. To be fair, it's safer now than it was in the past, but if some criminal wants your van he'll probably get it.

Noted, don’t park on water. Thanks friends.

I would not have admitted to being so daft as to set up camp on sand in a tidal zone, but hopefully your post will save other vanners from what could have been a fatal error.

So sorry you had to go through this! Water will actually move a very far distance over flat land so even though you were far from the coastline at the time, it doesn't take much to bring it up to you. 😔

I’m so glad you helped a fellow traveler! It’s all part of the adventure!

It’s such an amazing community. It’s awesome that everyone stayed and helped each other, I couldn’t imagine most of the people I know doing that for strangers
