Video editing for programmers: Using FFmpeg to combine multiple files

Adding an image to a video in a modern video editor like iMovie can be somewhat straight forward; but not always–there can be a lot of confusing or frustrating nuance in all of the UI, application options, and export settings... For some left-brained people or for someone who has several videos to format, the command line may actually be the better tool.
