A little-known shrine to T-Rex lead singer Marc Bolan

Right next to Barnes station is where the lead singer of T. Rex, Marc Bolan, died in 1977. Ross Miklaszewicz takes a look.

It was thought Bolan was killed when his car hit the now much-beribboned sycamore tree. He was, in fact, killed when his Mini hit a steel-reinforced fence post. Where previously he had been thought to have been crushed to death in the car, a new book reveals he suffered a horrific head injury from an eye bolt in the fence. The book also reveals that the tree so despised by fans actually prevented the car from sliding down an embankment and causing an even worse tragedy.

Car hit a concrete bollard not the Tree, i went to visit in 2007 the Tree even then was no thick enough to damage a mini to the extent Marc’s was. Its a very peaceful place in the lane you hardly notice the road noise i have been back a few times.

I did not know about his house being looted after his death - even after all that time, I find that utterly disgusting. He was being driven home by the singer Gloria Jones, who had a hit with the song 'Tainted Love', I believe.
