Adding a Tenere 700 to my fledgling stable that consists of a 2019 DR650 . ADV & Dual Sport bikes can take you anywhere . Spring can't get here soon enough !

Thanks, great comparison for new riders. With the decline in dual sport bikes two new segments came in, the Enduro segment representing larger capacity dual sports such as the KTM 690 and the Rally segment featuring smaller capacity adventure bikes with 21” front wheels such as the KTM 790 adv, Tenere 700 and BMW 800gs, though I think the newer 850gs moved back into the adventure segment with the bump in weight and electronics.

I agree, any bike can be an adventure bike once configured a bit with some coming fully configured from the factory. Maybe it’s time to come up with a more defined naming convention such as the

dual sport (road legal dirt bikes) - Honda CRF450l
Enduro bikes (road capable dirt bikes) - larger capacity yet still single cylinder
Rally bikes (50/50 dirt/road bikes) - twin cylinders
Explorer bikes (the new set of smaller capacity road bikes comfortable on dirt) - Honda cb500x
Adventure touring bikes (dirt capable touring bikes).

that's why I'm buying a CRF300L next to my TDM900. They just compliment each other in different ways.

There still hasn't been a true replacement for the 640 Adventure. I'm keeping mine forever!

I wish you highlighted some of the lighter ADV's, they're cheaper than 15-20k by a long shot, and <400 pounds, Versys X-300 for instance - more like <5k before addons, well under 10k after.

Dual sports are very simple....cheap, can get more difficult terrain than adv...

When you say it takes more practice taking a adv bike off road; whatt do you mean? and how would you practice safely in your opinion?

Thinking of buying a KLR650AD to add to my stable which is just currently a KLX230R which I only use on trials and Farmland. I am wondering how different off roading will be on the KLR.

I'm considering a kawasaki 1000 for gravel and dirt roads in my area because I do want to pack gear for days out on the range both valley and mountain, what sort of tires should I consider? or any other bike for that matter, thanks

Question of the day. Is a Honda nx250 an adventure bike or a dual sport? 😁

The difference, dual sport is used for adventure, Adv are used on the road by people who want you to think they do off road adventures.
Take a 1, 200cc bike on an ordinary single track and you'll see what I mean.
