Dual Sport Motorcycles VS Adventure Touring Motorcycles

What's up everyone, in this video I want to cover dual sport motorcycles vs adventure touring motorcycles. This is another one of those questions that I get constantly at the shop, what is the difference between a dual purpose motorcycle and an adventure motorcycle?

The difference is all in the size of the bike, the motor, and the weight. Dual Sport bikes are really dirt bikes modified to work on the street. Adventure bikes are really street (touring) motorcycles that are set up to be manageable off-road. That's it, an adventure bike is really a dual purpose bike on steroids that is big enough to work better on the street!

Please leave any questions in the comment section below, I look forward to the discussion! I'll always answer your questions here on ask a motorcycle guy. And please note that if I forgot to mention your favorite bike it doesn't mean I don't love it, I only have so much time haha!

That's it for dual sport vs adventure touring, catch you next time.

I am a new beginner rider in dual sport and adventure motorcycles looking into one of them. What size dual sport motorcycle and adventure motorcycle would you recommend for a beginner?

This could've been summed up in 17 words.
Adventure bikes are street bikes for the dirt.
Dual Sport bikes are dirt bikes for the street.

Still don't want to take an R1200GS off road. Picking that thing up must really suck

Can you please stop walking for a minute, show both types of bikes side-by-side, and compare them? That's the point of this video, right? Thanks...

I miss my vstrom 1000, totaled by a red light runner. That was way more fun than my wr250r because
1) better street bike
2) can carry more luggage
3) that v twin💛💙💜
4) super smooth transmission
5) highway use!

*Dual-Sport* : Street Legal Enduro Bike (sacrificing full 100% offroad by adding street legal tires, additional crap weight (license plate holder etc), rearview mirrors, turn signals etc). Result: Lighter-Med. weighing bikes). Comfort level: Shit to Mediocre.
*Adventure* : Whole different bike that you can also do on and offroad, but generally speaking for extreme long rides and more tech. Result: Heavier Bikes. Comfort level: Good to Kim Kardashian approved.
*Then there is the "WTF is a Honda Crf250Rally Basically, a Dual-Sport + Adventure bike made love and had an awesome cheap Baby.*

and "mini adv class" is finally here! hahahaha! I am planning on going with a BMW G310GS here in a couple of weeks. My Vstrom, although awesome on the big roads and would eat up 300 miles in great just a bit too much of a handful for my scrawny 160 lb butt off road. I did it, but man that thing gave me a H*** of a workout in just a couple of hrs off road! The G320GS is MUC lighter! Slap on a good set of Tractionator tires, some small panniers and a medium topcase and good to go! :-D

Well said, the new Kawasaki Verses 300 is another ( in between bike ) and even the SWM 650 Superdual - which I own -leans more to the dirt side and has its routes in the Husky TE630. But a fantastic 50/50 bike does dirt really well and road really well ( like a updated DR 650 " BUT WAY BETTER" Paul from Australia

One of the best descriptions between dual sport and ADV that I have seen. Well done! I've been riding for 51 years. My first dual sport, then called an enduro, was a Yamaha Trailmaster 100. Yeah, look that one up! I have owned many bikes over the years, in every genre including choppers. I've never owned or ridden a trials bike. Bucket list. But I always seem to come back to dual sports. There is a DR650 in the garage, along with a new KLR650, my fourth one, first gen 2. I'm setting it up for long distance touring off road possibly doing part of the trans America trail. Back roads, dirt roads, two tracks and easier single track trails, which brings me to my point. It isn't so much the bike you buy and then ride according to your perception of where it is supposed to be ridden. It's about where you really want to ride. Do you want to camp? Do you want to hotel it? Do you need human contact? Do you want to get away from everybody and drop off the grid for a while? Do you need cell service and internet contact? You may go through 2 or 3 bikes before you figure it out. Your take on the KLR was spot on. Some insist that it is a dual sport, others think it an ADV. They have been ridden around the world, while others think it is a great commuter. Don't think about what the bike's intentions are. Think about what kind of rider you are. Then pick a bike.

well said man. I agree completely. Easiest way to say it... ADV bike= dirt capable street bike. DUAL SPORT bike = street capable dirt bike. haha. I was typing this and u said it at the end. I am adventure touring US open ended schedule by way of sponsorship. Touring with my wife and kids. We just went from F800 and Versys X's to KTM 690, Honda Rally and XT250. We are banking on our love of the dirt to offset the brutality of the long lonely highway ass smashing miles to come. I've done the cross country KLR gig many times. But it's been awhile. My most a KLR in a day was 680 miles. Said screw camp and got a hotel. Woke up in full riding gear, helmet included. I just laid back and adiosed. If you meant what it sounded like that you did 1000.... my hat is off. I just plain old couldn't. haha. Great vid. Gonna sub and bell ya. thnx.

in regards of the larger bikes, mainly DRZ400 and GS1200, how do they fair for a shorter in seam rider? im only like 5' 8-9" is there a knack for riding bikes that high or are they like a womans dress in the sense of they look 8 foot long until they get into it?

Tenere 700 looks promising as an hybrid of the 2, if it ever comes out, and if it comes to my country, the tenere 660 didn't :(
