That doctor dident even bother to look at Leo's wound. He was like "Its 1880! What the hell am i going to do? leaches?" Lol

This part is sad but its brilliantly written.

Harold doesn't want to fight his son, he did ask Kid to drop out. And it also shows that while Harold's harsh words and constant insult for the Kid, he still respect his skill as he told the Kid "your time will come".

In the gun fight, you can see that they both landed the shots, while the Kid wants to show off his skill and aims for the head, he slightly misses it and only hit Harold's neck, while Harold's shot aimed is precise to conclude the victory. If the Kid aimed for the body, Harold may not have survived though.

I love the level of subtext that Gene Hackman brings to the John Herod character.
In a script like this, he didn't need to be anything more than a dragon for Sharon Stone to slay. But he really makes it more.
There's palpable self loathing rotting away beneath his big, tough, mean exterior. Everything he does is out of an unconscious desire to destroy himself.
That's why he goes out of his way to deny the Kid is his son. Even though he likes the Kid, he doesn't want to be responsible for him. He doesn't want a reason to live beyond himself.
I especially love how, as big and mean and tough as he is, he sees the way Ellen looks at him, and is compelled to say some words in his defense.

Gene Hackman was such an amazing asshole in this movie

It turns out that accuracy is at least as important as speed.

"Along with the kneecap, the gut is the most painful area a guy can get shot in. But it takes a long time to die from it. I’m talking days. You’re gonna wish you were dead, but it takes days to die from your wound. Time is on your side."

He could have said the 'not my son' line while the kid was still alive, but he didn't. At least he spared the boy that.

The dolly zoom and Dutch angle combo is just insane.

It gives a aense of dizziness, almost like an unbearable tension. And it's executed with such ease...

Top notch filmmaking.

This is how Vader versus Luke would’ve ended if he had grown up in the empire 💀lol

When the kid reached up for Harod to take his hand in his final moments and Harod just stood there, leaving his hand empty. Cold AF.

i appreciate gene hackman's modicum of humanity. he gave leo plenty of outs and seemed a little bit regretful at the end. not enough for the audience to forgive him, but enough to confirm he did care about as much as he could.

I honestly believe Kid did *not* do it for his father's respect. He did it because he was addicted to the town's love and praise. He constantly wanted to one up himself.

I mean...technically that's a valid way to avoid paying child support.

1:16 those are the cleanest boot soles I ever saw. everything in the movie is so stylized, you don't even notice.

I finally found this damn movie after like 8 years

When I was younger, like 12, I saw this scene along with one where he was sharpening a bullet or something (the old guy)

Nothing I searched for on google seemed to show me this but randomly through YouTube shorts I found it. Seeing Leo in those clothes stirred up old memories

Herod gives Kid an epitaph "it was never proved that he was my son" - and yet, if you watch him walking away in the background, you may notice that he's dropping his hat, his gun and finally throwing away the bandage he's been stopping the bleeding with, all in obvious expression of utter distress. He might have been a cold, ruthless bastard, but man, he truly loved his son and never wanted it to end like this.
