He betrayed his mentor because he was blocking research that could save Viktor’s life.
He wanted to share the credit with Victor but Victor refused
Victor is obsessed and works any time he isn’t sleeping or dying of tuberculosis so Victor is working while Jayce is doing pretty much anything.
