I didn't know Hobbes helped design that famous cover of Leviathan, interesting.

Of course every human is selfish by nature! Who can think in other people problems when overwhelmed by their own? Who can help anyone when finding him or herself in a helpess situation? Who can talk about "the hunger of the world" when feeling hungry? Selfishness is not a moral concept, every creature aims to its own survival (and of their progeny, wich is the survival of its own genes). In humans, selfishness is the survival instinct mixed with the strange conscience that we have. The ego is precisely the shape it takes. It is not good or bad, it just the way we are: if we learn to cope with it, we can easely overcome the conflict with everyoe else that it implies.

The Leviathan doesn't represent the king. The Leviathan represents the state. The king is just the head ("sovereign") of the Leviathan.

UNDERSTANDING the logic of "making peace" with your neighbor -- to improve everyone's llife -- is limited to a tiny subset of humans, Implementing this "peace" process runs contrary to the nature of most people, whose childish nature is instinctively selfish and impulsive. A "Social Contract" is a ploy created by that "tiny subset of human" whose purpose is to inhibit man's selfish nature...thus. creating a civil and orderly society.

The "children" must be "tricked" into cooperating FOR THEIR OWN GOOD. "Open up the hanger.. here comes the airplane". 👽

12:22 he always seems to be speaking to a male from a developed country and I don't feel much contemplated by that. earlier in this video he talks about "the day in the hospital in which you were born" and like, I wasn't born in a hospital. anyway. just don't feel like he thinks his audience would be diverse, i guess?
