Was Brushy Bill really Billy the Kid, A Few More Facts & Details

More details and facts to build on the 3 part series I already posted about Billy the Kid and the man, Brushy Bill Roberts, who claimed later in life he was actually a surviving Billy the Kid. Back then you could rob a bank, move two towns over, and never be caught or seen again. Before computers, internet, a few years of hard aging, etc make it easy to dissappear without a trace. Paper work filing back then was common too dissappear, it's also easy to change your legal name.

His family said he never been shot, but yet he had 8 bullet holes and stab wounds. They said he couldn't speak a world of Spanish, then answered a question that the reporter asked, in Spanish....Sounds like his family doesn't know a lot about him. Then other people that knew Billy back then, said he was Billy.

Now, Garrett wasn't best friends with Billy...So I don't see him making a deal with Billy ahead of time to fake his death, I don't see him ruining his own reputation back then by being labeled a coward and shooting an unarmed man in the back, kill another man, then bury him without the thought someone would check days after and then quickly realize, Billy wasn't Billy in that hole...If they exhumed his body, that would get him hanged for lying to collect a bounty...Which is something Garrett wouldn't risk. Even if he pulled that off, if Billy was ever seen, it's the same outcome. Garrett believed he killed Billy, could he of shot someone else thinking it was Billy while it was dark? That's more likely....Once word got around to Billy, he would of realized he could lay low and assume a new identity and be able to get out of the criminal life and live out the rest of his days as 'Brushy Bill'.

It doesn't make sense that he'd just bury them on the spot...Back then you always had to bring the body back in to collect the bounty, so that doesn't make sense. There's a lot of things that don't make sense, whether he lived or died that day..There's alot of things that point towards Brushy Bill being Billy, there's other things that don't...but if he did live, he lied about his entire life thereafter. Memories fade in time, especially at 96 years old....His life as Billy the Kid was over a lifetime ago, that would mean the vast majority of his life was a lie, it's hard to keep up with multiple lies, and when you continue telling a lie over and over again, you begin to see it as the actual truth...which makes it hard to remember the actual truth.

Also, I've heard native speakers of another language move to the US, and in 30 years without going home, they had issues speaking their native tongue...I imagine he never spoke Spanish again after changing his name, so he probably only remembered a few words or phrases. A lot of the things that point towards he isn't Billy, can be explained away with age and time passed.

But the biggest thing is having bullet holes in the same areas as Billy when family says he's never been shot or stabbed in his life... His hat, boot, hand, are all the same sizes. You lose multiple inches with age, especially if you have any sort of back injury that causes a change in posture.

I wonder if he kept his pistols...If so, his family may have 2 of the most infamous pistols ever shot in America, worth who knows what without even realizing it. I'd say I imagine he would of gotten rid of them to prevent being identified (or did Garrett supposedly take them as 'proof' of his death?) and got new guns to carey, but I don't know....When you have a gun that's your favorite(s), they're irreplaceable and they feel like an extension of your body, that's not something you just get rid of, especially back in those days...Maybe you carry others instead, but you don't get rid of them completely.

I'd say it's a 70-30% chance he is Billy...Too many things fit and what doesn't can be explained. Unless we get DNA evidence, I'm not drawing conclusions...Regardless, it's very interesting to think about.

Look at a picture of someone when they are 23 and then look at a picture of them when they are 90. 95% of the time you cant tell if its the same person. He explained things in scary detail during the interviews. Most of that stuff was not known to the public. Even if it was well known that old man with the lack of internet and other technology during the 1930s and 1940s could not have done that intense kind of research. Also remember that Morrison sought him out with info from a former gang member and found him in Hico. Brushy Bill up until that point had never mentioned it to anyone as far as I can find. That means any research Brushy would have had to have done would have been in the time from when Morrison came to his house and when he came back the next day. Either that or he did a lifetime of research, never mentioning it to anyone and just laid low waiting and hoping someone would one day come knocking on his door to ask if he was the Kid lol.

Definitely not Billy the Kid. Billy had a very rounded chin. This guy has a square jaw. The photos of the two were professionally compared and they don't match

I won't buy it until I see some physical evidence to back up this compelling Bill Roberts story because just a story isn't good enough for me.

For me all it took was Jesse Evans saying Billy the Kid was still alive.

Until there is some type of definitive proof of whether Brushy was The Kid, we will have to rely on the preponderance of evidence. 1st off in Brushy’s corner is the fact that we know he couldn’t have been Oliver Roberts. There are photos of younger Brushy proving he was older than Oliver. Beyond that if you don’t want to believe Brushy was the Kid, then you have to write off a great deal as coincidence. Very similar facial features, same height, same bullet wounds, detailed knowledge of the times, people, places related to The Kid. People that knew the Kid saying he was him, people that knew him after he was supposedly killed saying he was the Kid, etc., etc. The evidence that Garrett killed him is very weak at best. At what point do the number of coincidences become absurd to consider as coincidences? Maybe some points in the counter argument need to be looked at closer.

Come one anyone can see thats 2 different men Brushy looks nothing like Billy the kid his nose is pointy he had a cleft chin wider jaw and mouth completely different shape head theres no way that’s Billy unless they had plastic surgery back then and they sure didn’t

On the last pardon hearing turned clown show, Brushy was freaked out and the thought of arrest sent him into a heart attack. His 'memory' faded for a reason.

Always like the Brushy ones! He claimed that Billy Barlow was probably not his real name and believed him to possibly be a member of the Clements/Clemmens family. Billy Barlow was also the name of a popular song back then. So I'm going with alias. He also said that he knew quite well that Pat was in town and thought the beef carcass was a trap, which sounds more credible to me than him being completely unaware. Another odd detail was that in later years he reposed for his ferro type picture holding the rifle in the correct ( Left ) hand though nobody had noticed the plate was reversed. You can tell by the ejector port and the buttons on his shirt. So he did know the correct way the original was taken.

Always happy to see more content on Brushy Bill. He's supposedly my great (however many times) uncle on my grandmas side. There's plenty of info on him online but none of it within the academic realm until lately, just kinda conjecture. I'm not sure if I believe he was really Billy the Kid or not but he was a real person obviously and my grandpa remembered meeting him when he was a little kid and Brushy Bill was an old man in Hico, TX. I wish I knew more about him from a family perspective but my family aren't exactly historians

Ears are like fingerprints. billy's lobes are loose from his head. brushy bill's lobes grow flat on his face. You can absolutely see the difference. They don't have the same earlobe fingerprint not the same person. Brushy is a huckster
