Hi Abbotts at home. I have done similar tests as yours and was surprised to find that if I left the wood conditioner dry fully (sometimes up to 8 hours), then the results were much more even and other blochy'ness was cut down quite a bit more then only waiting 15m or even an hour (depending on temperature).

I can't tell you how helpful this video was for me. Imo, the most difficult color to get is a golden caramel brown because wood (especially softer woods) seem to just get that nasty dirty look whenever I use anything with brown in it. Red, orange, yellow, all seem fine, almost as if wood just can't wait to go any kind of orange 🤢 - disgusting 80's orange lol. And then I try to go a little bit into brown territory and bam! all these little dark spots pop up. Even with dye and even with just a super quick fast wipe technique which Ive tried in a desperate attempt to stop the dreaded dirty spotting. You rock!

Btw, it takes a lot for me to subscribe these days but I did. Thanks again

I would love to see what the rest would be if you used shellac imstead of wood conditioner.

Hi we don't have wood conditioner in Australia so would Sanding sealer be ok?

Also do you need to prime the wood before applying the gel stain or can you put it on without it?

Cheers

They all look fantastic, especially for pine! Nicely done!!!

Ooo except that one 😂 probably a finicky old bastard in the first place and I bet the factors you mentioned continued to nail that coffin lid down. But still, a lot of great looking pine 🦅🦅

Not having a final view and review from the same angle as the first half of the video made it really difficult to actually tell what was what.

Wish you had sown all products specilly wood conditioner so as a novice, i could buy the right product.

If the glaze was oil based and the stain underneath was water based or vice versa, you probably didn’t let the underneath dry long enough before putting glaze over it.

A fundamental mistake is sanding it too smooth. There is no reason to go above 120. You don't want the pores of the wood closed tight, it inhibits stain penetration and finish adhesion. The stain surface can be knocked down before finish with any green pad if needed.

Two words GENERAL FINISHES 😉
I don’t think you are getting the results you desire. I suggest try water based by this brand it will knock your socks off. Pine is notorious for being a hard to stain wood. You need something very rich in pigment to knock down all that yellow. The stuff you get from the big box store doesn’t cut it. Also gel stain is more for layering the non wood surfaces or existing finishes. Pine is too soft for gel stain to get a good stick.
I’ve watched videos of people that have been experimenting with stains and woods for 30 plus years. There is so much to the chemistry of it all. I don’t think many people realize the complexity to different wood species and different stain options. Keep trying don’t settle for anything in a yellow can minwax or varathane. I’m saying it the nicest way possible my makeup has more pigment than those brands.

Simple, if I have a stain with a color I do not care for, I change the color.
