Interested to hear your thoughts, as always. Btw will be streaming today, but energy is low 😅 the time to touch grass may soon be here. Wanna get SOME rest before the contest mode raid gets here.

I am in complete agreement with everything you've said here. If I might add. The difference between the lore and story is shown off starkly by this expansion.

People who have heard the whispers know what I'm talking about here.

Lore this expansion is phenomenal but the story has massive missed opportunities.

To me, the final cutscene of the seasonal story felt more powerful emotionally speaking than the entire Lightfall campaign

The Caital last stand was incredibly fun. It was so refreshing actually taking the battlefield with an NPC.

You REALLY hit the nail on the head with the whole "back in the Red War, Ikora was losing her shit!" Compared to how she acts when the Traveller has apparently literally fucking died, and her reaction is just "oh no, anyway!"

100% agree, if you remove the story from the campaign, the campaign was so much fun. That final stand we make with Caitl and her troops was IMO one of the best campaign moments in Destiny history. Such an epic battle fighting along side a main character and other Cabal allies. We have been asking for something like that for years and Bungie really delivered. Of course I wish the story telling was better but man I had fun playing the campaign and I'm loving the post campaign content.

Savathun saying “Thanks for the memories, Guardian” is better than the entirety of the storytelling in the Lightfall campaign. Rasputin saying “Ana, it’s time.” held more emotional weight than anything Rohan or Nimbus did. It’s genuinely baffling to me how the storytelling ball was dropped so hard after its been so consistently good over the past two years.

A big letdown for me, aside from the story, is the Guardian Ranks. It was meant to be a system that placed you on rank based on the totality of your D2 career rather than just your Seasonal grind, but it turned out that everyone who anywhere played from 5 to 5k hours is Rank 6 and you can only get to Rank 7 by completing specific challenges.

Only it's even more restrictive cause at least with Seasonal Ranks, I could level up by doing whatever activities I wanted, albeit slower compared to someone doing Seasonal Challenges or completing Bounties, but with Guardian Ranks, I can ONLY level up by doing challenges, meanwhile seasonal rank gave you, for the most part, a good idea of a player's skill level but now everyone's Rank 6.

And with it resetting every Season what's the actual difference between the two systems?

My main problem is that the way Lightfall was advertised, it made it feel like we would have so much more than what we got. The main trailer we got literally showed us jumping out a window, they said we would have breakable pieces of the map, we had this whole futuristic space action movie vibe hyped up for us, and then almost none of that was there. No jumping out windows, no getting chased out buildings, the “breakable map pieces” were just glass pillars that make a sound and little spark effect when you shoot it, etc. So much was hyped up and it ended up giving a significantly small portion of what we were expecting. Strand really carries the expansion, but even then the introduction to the subclass took away from the story and made it into a tutorial for strand with a handful of good moments. I do appreciate that the guardian was an actual character in the story and not just someone watching from the sidelines like in Season of the Haunted, but imo the expansion only really had a couple good campaign moments and Strand, everything else was really just extra stuff to be able to say there was more content.

Witch queen was advertised heavily as a mystery and in it, there was a mystery and we got answers.
Lightfall was advertised at the beginning of the end, a war with the witness. What we got was just a ton of questions, weird strand training, and that's pretty much it.

Honestly story wise WQ had gravitas and nuance, the storytelling was amazing and the seasons before had helped in building up the narrative and strengthening it, it felt high stake’s especially as you got closer to the end of the campaign and playing on legendary and solo was honestly an improvement for the feel of the story, maybe that’s just me but whenever I would see a lightbearer hive spawn I was immediately worried I knew I had to take them out quickly or I’d be in trouble and it made encounters feel threatening, Lightfall had everything it needed to be a great story but it feels like there was a lack of implementation of important characters along with a lack of focus, WQ got Eris involved and whenever she’s on the field you know it’s serious, they than had Ikora playing a part and had Zavala make an appearance and the dialogue during missions was great, for our “infinity war” moment it feels lonely and kinda weak and the questions left unanswered isn’t what’s upsetting it’s how everyone appears to know but just doesn’t elaborate, the only thing we get is ghost saying that the veil is “traveler like” which is great but, what does that mean, if no one knew what the veil was and there was a back and forth between Rohan and Osiris with differing levels of experience in the field it would have helped build up that reveal, imagine no one knowing anything about the veil for the entire story and than in the final mission instead of “it’s traveler like” ghost is genuinely confused “I don’t understand It feels like the traveler, I feel light emanating but it’s different….. darker” or something idk that’s my rant

Whats really frustrationg are the little nuggets of quality storytelling in the campnign. Every interaction between Calus and the Witness, Rohan and Nimbus calling you and Orisis "warlords", the Radial Mast being a Light artifact, and the Ishtar facility that houses the Veil is so fascinating that its frustrating to never gets answers.

i think the fact that the first cutscene and the final cutscene of the campaign go together completely seamlessly, say a lot more about the campaign than a lot of people want to admit. no bueno

Getting people invested in story also helps with playtime as it forces people to slow down

At least for me, it's not only about the story, the way the campaign was designed was like a big strand tutorial, now that strand is fully available is a really good subclass (didn't felt like that at the beggining), the mod system feels kinda watered down but we still need to experiment with it more, Neomuna is meh (doesn't feel like there is a war in place). The post campaing is decent, the exotics are good, the new weapons are interesting (I don't care about re-skins), but what adds to this is once again the neglection of core playlists, only 1 new strike, no new cruicible maps and gambit... at this point is forgotten. The difference is that despite how much Bungie updates strand, adds new mods, buffs the weapons, you will not receive new strikes with LF, Cruicible maps are on the way (only 2 LOL), and Gambit still Gambit, the only thing that was left to that has felt really good is the story and it is now REALLY REALLY bad and sadly no matter how much Bungie updates the game, the story will remain bad and just see the steam reviews on WQ and LF, yes the story is not the most important point for buying those DLC's however see how a good story really matters for a lot of people.

Rohan's death was sad, because clearly, the wrong cloudstrider died.

I play for both the mechanics and story. I too have been greatly enjoying the addition of strand and being able to play around with it. My biggest problem aside from the story itself is the aftermath. Because there was such a short story I wanted to jump right in to the Neomuna world activities, but even after a Legend campaign run I am still under powered and all the enemies are just bullet sponges to me, which doesnt make me want to spend time doing what is new. So unfortunately, between the realative failure of story telling mixed with the apparent oversight of over leveled world activites my desire to play has been killed until they make some changes or hopefully give us a better explanation with the raid.

SPOILER

Fun Fact: Rohan states that the Relay can only be destroyed by Strand, then proceeds to destroy the relay via self destruct. Ergo, the Cloud striders are Strand.

It's a shame, honestly. The concept of Neomuna is great, and the background lore books and tabs about Neomuna are fun and a good read.

Bungie should pay Hajime Iseyama (creator of attack on titan) 5 million dollars to fix their narrative as the new story lead, but only getting him part time of course, maybe just 20 hours a week
