Southern Fried Cabbage - perfect side dish or easy weeknight dinner.

1 pound bacon - chopped
1 small (2 lb.) head cabbage, quartered, cored, and cut into 1-in. pieces (10 cups)
1/2 cup finely chopped sweet onion (from 1 small onion)
2 Tbsp. water
2 tsp. kosher salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper

Heat a Dutch oven over medium high heat. Add bacon; cook, stirring often, until bacon is browned-crisp, 5 to 6 minutes. Transfer bacon to a plate. Do not wipe the Dutch oven clean.

Add cabbage and onion to drippings in Dutch oven. Stir in water, salt and black pepper until combined, about 2 minutes. Cover, and cook over medium, stirring occasionally, until tender, 10 to 12 minutes or until desired consistency.

Return bacon to the Dutch oven, and stir to combine. Serve.

Have you ever tried eating the cabbage core. Growing up in the ‘50’s, I always looked forward to my mom cutting up a cabbage for whatever. I always loved the taste of raw cabbage and gnawing on the cabbage core was a treat

I would be lost without my kitchen shears. I love them and I use mine all the time and I give them as gifts so everybody will have a pair in their own kitchen. Nothing cuts bacon faster. it will even cut meat in to chunk or smaller pieces they are such a life saver in you Kitchen Ms Stephanie is so right about these shears...

Looks very good, our cooks at the small school i went to cooked this at least 2 times a month, all of us loved it.that wasback in 1956.great memories.

This the first person or show to cut bacon with shears that I have ever seen. I discovered this myself years ago and then started using shears after lots of trials and discovered it to be a versatile essential tool. I am eighty years old and love cooking shows. Wish they had have when I was a new bride and cook. Best motivation was my appreciative husband.

This is how I have eaten cabbage my entire life. I love it! I usually add (at serving) a small drizzle of lemon juice or vinegar. Yum!

I do the same thing with smoked sausage, the kind that's sold in big loops. Slice it into little rounds, fry until you get a little browning, add chopped onions, let them start to brown, add the chopped cabbage, cook until the cabbage is tender.

The sausage is more substantial than bacon, but I'm sure the bacon version is great, too.

Next time I make this, I might add the bacon and have both.

I like the use of scissors in cutting up the bacon. I have a pair I use only when needed for cooking!😊 Nice recipe!

I just made this 4 days ago! I make fried cabbage several ways,
it was the first time I made with bacon.
I make it by itself, or with noodles, or with pork roast or steaks.
there's an Hungarian recipe I make
with pork, cabbage, rice, in seasoned tomato sauce.
