Tolkien created a green, magical world. Herbert created a harsh desert world 🌎. And Tolkien was a very harsh critic, even of his own works. I've read both authors books and have enjoyed each for different reasons.

Because if LoTR is an allegory for the goodness of man/Christianity and a savior figure, Dune is the opposite--it shows how corrupt religions and makeblieve Messiahs are dangerous

Being an old Boomer I read Dune and most of the sequels when they were fresh off the presses. Even as a teen I saw stuff like personal shields being a cheap McGuffin to make knife fighting valid and speaking of cheap gimmicks there's Gurney Halleck. The Sardaukar were never even demonstrated to be that good but went down like a jobber in a pro wrestling match
