Yeah, with kids, naturalness always wins! If you want to say "tree" in Mandarin, it would be unnatural to just use the word/character 木 (as you can in Japanese), so he instantly mentally replaces it with 树 (which he pronounces correctly as "shu"): the natural way to say "tree" in Mandarin!
