Replacing A Rotten Rim Joist

Today I'm going to completely replace the rim joist and sill plate because termites and water infiltration that have done a real number on this corner of my house. We need to sister the joists to make them stronger and put a new subfloor under the wall assembly. I put this one off for a long time because the idea of removing the only things supporting the walls of your house is a bit daunting! Turns out it's not such a big deal.

I recently had work done and they used wedges in crawl space to get enough space to remove old rotted sill plate and push new sill plate in pieces. However they didn’t remove old rotten rim board. Instead they cut many pieces and put it next to old rotted rim board from inside the crawlspace. Is that structurally sound and will old wood cause new wood to rot? I also had them install sump pump and drain tile to remove standing water that I assume was cause of this.

Just a heads up, keep an eye on that sister piece and don't place heavy loads above it. It is not ideal to sister that way because wood is much better at compressive loads than tension loads. Currently those are in compression from the wall as well as the floor but in tension where the nails are holding the pieces together, also use glue, nails are to hold wood together until glue sets. Wood can split along the grain in these instances which is why a full length sister is the permanent fix.

I don’t know how the code is where you live, but where I’m from, you have to use glue, as-well-as carriage bolts with nuts and washers when sistering 3 pieces together on a rim joist. I think you can use nails on 2 if you run the sister the entire length of the span with glue

Wow this looks like it 😂 We have a mobile where thankfully the rim joist on these aren’t load bearing either. Any tips or suggestions?

That Dewalt automatic feeder option is nice. Any issues with it auto-feeding screws?

Great example of how a DIY-er can do this type of work. Go slow and take your time! It's not rocket science.
