An interesting EDC Altoids tin modification

Your EDC Altoids tin is packed to the rafters with dozens of essential items and every single one of them is important, but now the lid won't close. You've got some decisions to make and here is one solution that some might be interested in trying.

So my point on not doing this is that restricting what you add to the confines of the interior of an Altoids tin is a big part of using one. It makes you think very carefully about every item you add to the tin and the return you will get for the size and weight of each item. By adding additional storage to the exterior, your tin turns into something else. I'm really curious to hear what others think about the purpose of the EDC Altoids tin...

I use Ranger bands that I made myself. It holds the lid down. It’s a combustible source so I can use it to make fire if I need to. Plus all the other uses for Ranger bands. I can seal around the seam (lid and hinges) to make it waterproof as well, plus the added benefit of it not sliding around in my pocket or pack.

One last thought, I make my ranger bands from used bicycle tires that you can get just by going into REI or Cabela’s or a bike shop and asking for them. I don’t recommend just digging through a dumpster because well that draws unwanted attention.

Silicone bracelets fit perfectly around an Altoids tin.

I've been carrying an altoids tin for over 10 years and never thought of this. I guess I know what I'll be doing when I get home tonight

I wonder how many Ant Man suits you could fit in there

Ill stick to my own kits. Been making kits for about 55 years now. Mine work, plus when folks are curious, i actually show kit to them. Not just tell them about it and not show. But contrary to a lot of folks, mine don't give instant salvation. That stuff is in pockets. My little belt kit allows me the means to create whatever tools, shelter, water system., food capability, Nav, and very basic first aid.
Primary knife for my kit is victorinox Huntsman, improved. Bit in heavy forest where i live, i usually take about 5 or 6 various bladed tools, and, add water filter, bedroll, and chow/cook pouch to my harness. Lighter set up than a standard pack. Works for me, might not for someone else. Safe Travels.

I always found these pointless for anything but a pocket first aid kit. Everything being packed in tightly males it the least convenience possible. Yes, I've tried using carrying one and using it and concluded that it was just a trend more than anything.

Idea. Glue 2 cans together maybe? Maybe a standard mint and then a red to differentiate the contents of each side.

Bud. Wrap an elastic band around the tin to keep it shut. The elastic band itself can come in handy at times.

I just put a hair tie around it. Bonus: I now have a hair tie I didn’t have to pack!

When I was 11 I believe I took an Altoids tin, sanded and glued 2 mini tins on top and then added 2 sliding drawers on the bottom

A Stick On Velcro Button and a Velcro strap. Gorilla Glue one end of the strap to the bottom edge of the tin. Secure the adhesive back Velcro Button to the top of the tin. You can cut to fit both the Velcro strap and the button to fit however you want.

I have 2 TINS. The Altoids RED edge is my First Aid tin. BLUE edge tin is everything else

Extra leader, bullet weights, and hooks. Tiny tin, filled with power bait. Ta da, now I have free hand for ice chest and the fishing rod.

I would go with a slightly larger tin off of eBay instead. Keeping things thin and simple are main tenets of an Altoids EDC. This can be done with a slightly bigger tin without defeating the purpose. Also, ranger bands... I saw someone say this....yes.

My grandfather wore slacks all his life. So ever since I was a kid, I always wondered why he wrapped it in a blue produce rubber band. He said so his wallet doesn't fall out. Put a blue rubber band on it
