VW has a chance to make things right with the Mk8.5 Golf. Did it succeed?

The Mk8.5 Volkswagen Golf is here with some key improvements. Addressing the issues with the Mk8, VW has made crucial changes both outside and inside. In this review, Sam Sheehan runs through what they are, and whether they're enough to make the Golf the go-to hatchback again.

With a turbocharged petrol engine and mild hybrid setup, this new Golf also gains ChatGPT tech to make it more usable while driving. Does it solve the issues of the Mk8? We tested it as well as the improvements to the rest of the interior technology.

The Golf has long reigned king in the highly competitive hatchback class which sees it going against tough competition such as:
- BMW 1 Series
- Hyundai i30
- Mercedes-Benz A-Class
- Vauxhall Astra
- Ford Focus
- Audi A3
- Mazda 3
- Peugeot 308

In this film, Sam drives the 1.5 TSI evo2 R-Line with a six-speed manual gearbox, but the new Golf is available in these engine configurations too:
- 1.5 TSI
- 2.0 TSI
- 2.0 TDI
- 1.5 PHEV

Is the Mk8.5 Golf the go-to hatch once again? Sam thinks it makes a much stronger case for itself, but what do you think?

Why do i need chat gpt in my car? Go back to proper needles and plush interiors. Stop wasting money on gadget and put it into the materials.

The screen is huge and the wheels are fancy, but 40K is ultimately crazy. Great hatchback and good to buy used too! I also like the ChatGPT tech. Just get one used!

Gorgeous car. Honestly dunno what people are on about. Ordered one in moonstone grey, r-line with sunroof and IQ lights. So excited the face lift is great. Really glad they’ve made the climate controls backlit. Yes it’s not as practical as knobs but it’s fine. The screen is a lot more responsive than the previous mk8.

£37k Why is it so

Here in Oz you can get a base Golf R (no sunroof) and £1k worth of fuel with that.

What do you guys think about this new golf but some lower version not R-Line for about 28k €? Here they are probably little bit cheaper.

Will this be the same for the U.S. market?

To pay that amount of money for Golf, I really dont care what technology it has or what it hasn't. 40K for a Golf it's just absurd.

VW have cheapened out on the Mk8. Mk7 and Mk6 was peak golf

To be fair, even artificial intelligence can’t keep up with the constantly changing UK prime ministers..

I can fix the Golf by buying a Mazda 3, or a Peugeot 308, or a KIA C'eed, or a Honda Civic, or a Toyota Corolla. 😌 Even the Polo is ok now that I have a 2024 Mazda 2.

Lookig at one of these on lease £302 a month for 24 months id never pay £38k for it though

You said that the car's engine is a 1.5 litre mild hybrid, but it's clearly a manual car so it must be the 1.5 without hybrid assistance. Otherwise a good review, but £37k is a bit steep!
