If you tune in to the CW parts of the Amateur Radio with an AM receiver and you do not have a BFO (beat frequency oscillator), you will first receive 12 kHz at once and not only that you will receive an awful lot of signals, the signals will degrade massively. Because for a clear reception both sidebands must have the same signal (A2A), which would be called "modulated CW". For this you just "beep" your CW signal into the audio of your transmitter, which will result in more or less three lines that will get transmitted, in the middle the carrier and left and right in the distance of 800 Hz (if your tone was 800hz) the two lines of your beep.
