Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are often used to manipulate instruments like this current meter. The ROV is holding the current meter in front of large deep-sea corals growing in Sur Ridge, an underwater mountain range located 35 kilometers (21 miles) off the Big Sur coast.⁠

This species, Paragorgia arborea, is also called bubblegum coral. These corals create complex, three-dimensional structures that provide habitat for many other animals. Deep-sea coral communities like this at Sur Ridge don’t receive as much attention as their shallow-water counterparts, but their roles in marine ecosystems are equally important. MBARI researchers are studying how these vulnerable communities are affected by human activities.
