Higher level completing the square, write in the form a(x + p)squared + q

This video is all about completing the square and forms part of the higher level playlist of the same name. I've also added to the playlist on GCSE higher revision.

This question is a little difficult as you need to work with fractions. On that basis it's likely that this would be around level 7 - 9, although there's only a few marks available.

Write in the form a(x + p)squared + q

4xsquared + 8x - 11

Hello Simon, Thank you for your videos - I am confused about a particular part of a question. The question is write in the form p(x+q)^2 + r, the following 4x^2 -14x -5. I know how to work it out but I am wondering why the 14/4 is simplified to 7/2. I understand we divide by 2 the numerator and denominator but why?
