This was super informative (coming from a psych undergrad). So often the dramatization of therapy looks different than an actual session. I wonder if this contributes to mental health stigma or helps alleviate it?

The house where the therapist portrayed on the show resides is in BALDWIN Hills NOT Beverly Hills. Baldwin hills is actually an upper middle class African American neighborhood located in the hills of a suburb in Los Angeles between Inglewood and South Central. She actually says it on one of the episodes and says it was previously her parents home. A google search says the same.... I was raised in that area as well. Just wanted to clarify. If you are going to provide info and use it as a factor, please make sure it is correct. So your opening statement that where she resides is unrealistic is definitely incorrect. Thanks😌

I’m surprised with how seemingly all over the place the writing has got for this series. I found it very reassuring seeing how well the first few seasons captured that therapist/patient relationship boundary. It seems like this time around it’s just too focused on shock value, and making therapy seem way more unethical than it actually is. A little disappointed

I don't think this is a violation of HIPAA. She's at home, she isn't revealing any ePHI to external parties. The mere fact that a patient's name displays on your phone is not inherently a problem. You're right though, she should take steps to make sure people don't see the name displayed before answering said call, but you don't need a technical safeguard. You could employ a physical safeguard (like applying a screen filter that makes it impossible to see for anyone who isn't looking directly at the phone)... And just as an FYI, if you're using something like google voice to be your forwarding service and you don't have a signed BAA with them (then technically you would be in violation of HIPAA even though google encrypts their data in transit and at rest). Don't get me wrong, I think you're right HBO did probably 0 HIPAA research, but let's not get overly zealous here.

The Paul character would tell his patients to call him whenever if they needed him. I am curious as to why you have not mentioned this as in issue previously.

I saw the whole series and the therapist is struggling with personal issues. But I think you may be more humble in your criticism. I love your instruction on the tasks around starting a practice.

Even it being fiction it makes people assume this is what therapy is like even a little. I'm sort of surprised at all the ethical concerns in the show. Like did they not consult numerous therapists?! We watched the first season in my grad program to talk through it. I wish we had this episode. Haha

I appreciate the info and your thoughts regarding the series. I felt very disappointed to keep up with the seasons. It felt very engaging when the previous therapist was struggling with his wife and all things happening with patients. Anyways, I have not watched your other videos but this one was really helpful. I appreciate your time, Dr.

I just wanted to say that you have a really soft and at the same time confident (not that it's a paradox..) aura about you, and I think that's beautiful!

She gets worse...she ends up shouting/threatening this poor guy in later episodes...I feel the most sorry for him because he is a very troubled guy with a terrible therapist who is obstructing his care.

This was very interesting! Have you ever done a reaction video to the previous seasons with Paul? If not, can you do one?

Speaking as a counselor and an individual who’s attended counseling sessions for myself, the entire session from the late phone call to the med issue, was highly unethical at its best!
I agree with every word of your analysis. When I first watched season four, I thought the writers intentions were going for eccentric and unorthodox.
Which, at the least, was already confusing. As the session progressed, I became extremely uncomfortable not only for the client, but the doctor too. This is NOT what being InTreatment means at all! First of all, therapists are trained to fully assess with the biophycosocial model, or at least something close to it. As an initial evaluation she needs to determine a client’s treatment plan before she starts throwing out quotes and accusations. One of the first rules for treating mental illness is to rule out, diagnose and establish a treatment plan. This includes, but not limited to, a history of substance abuse or any medical or previous mental health diagnosis and/ or treatment. Including medications. This therapist acted put out when he informed her of his wanting a referral because he needed his meds. She got defensive. She continuously tried to turn the tables, and focused herself as the main topic, at her clients expense. The last thing you want is a therapist with control issues. If that was my client, the first thing I would’ve done, after a proper evaluation, is find out if he needed meds. She mentioned insomnia was a symptom. Yes, for him, it was a symptom of his manic depression!! Any therapist worth their salt, would know how critical it is for an individual with manic depression, to be on medication to help stabilize the client. She didn’t portray empathy or concern. How did she intend to give him quality treatment while he was so unstable; physically and emotionally? Six nights with no sleep! I’m surprised he wasn’t psychotic! He was acting pretty normal. She acted more disturbed than him. For me, the most interesting and dramatic part of the session was the music. It seemed they threw in the characters as an after thought.

OMG as someone who treats insomnia for CBTi, WHY has she not asked him about getting a physical?

I invite conversations on the importance of diversifying therapy norms to allow for Culturally Competent and Responsive Professionals who make therapy accessible and most importantly RELATABLE for anyone and everyone. The reason the first three seasons relate so much to yours and a speckle of my undergrad/grad school academic experiences are because we were conditioned to think westernized psychology/mental health ideologies are all there is. No one speaking up and saying "hmmm, maybe freud, kaslow, etc were on to something in there time, but we have to make sure we're staying current with the culture of our generations Mental Health patterns and developments."

I watched the first three seasons of In Treatment and absolutely loved it. It was believable. It contained many themes, including the loneliness of aging, the benefits and dangers of self-discovery, the complexities that lie under the surface of our interpersonal and professional relationships, boundaries and the dilemmas that arise when crossing them. They always tried to keep the therapist true to reality. Like many I waited for Season 4 for a long time, and I was so excited when it came out. Which is why after watching S4 it I felt terrible disappointment. I don't blame Uzo Aduba. I think she did amazingly well with the material they gave her. But the creators of this product threw out everything that I loved about In Treatment, and I was very sad because of it. It feels like they hired an entirely new team to develop the show, and the team did not have any knowledge of how therapy is actually done. The only thing that remained true to the first four seasons was the format. But it's like the format is painted onto an entirely different entity. Now that this failed after one season, I don't think they're likely to do another one. It's terribly disappointing.

Hi there. I've just watched a couple of your In Treatment it. Love the show. I didn't watch the fourth season but whatever. You were talking about the whole medication thing, have you seen that show Huff? Only lasted two seasons with storylines not completed, etc, but I loved Hank Azaria in the lead role. I won't tell you what happens in the first episode, but if you watch the show, have you ever had something like that happen in your office?

You should react to Couple's Therapy, it's this reality TV show that across a whole season shows therapy sessions of different couples. The therapist was pretty good but I just wish she intervened more because a few people's toxic behavior went unaddressed due to fear of their reaction. Idk, I go to therapy twice a month and I personally prefer a cutthroat approach from my therapist.

Never have I ever has a season 2. The therapy sessions looked generally better than Season 1 to my unprofessional eye. Would be good to have your reaction.
