Panasonic CHALLENGES Nikon, Sony, Canon with 2 FULL FRAME Mirrorless Cameras | S1 and S1R Preview

Panasonic today announced the development of two FULL FRAME mirrorless cameras, the S1 and S1R. The S1 is a 24 megapixel camera with the S1R coming in at 47. This looks like an almost exact copy of what Nikon is doing with the Z6 and Z7 and what Sony has done with the A7III and A7R III.

**NOTE** In the video I said FULL FRAME 4K @ 60p based off of this statemenet "*1. World's first support for 4K 60p/50p video recording in a full-frame Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera." We will need to verify if it's a full frame readout or cropped. ***

If you only knew about the G9 from Panasonic, this is basically how it looks like but with a full frame mount, not based on the Z7 body. To me, the Z7 took some hints from Lumix G9 for their mirrorless ergonomics. And yes, I love my G9. I can use a speedbooster to increase the f number from a ff lens, and also help to make the images a bit sharper than the native brand.

Spec sheet is kinda hard to ignore... I'm a Nikon shooter and don't really know much about the Panasonic systems ... but that sounds like a system that can.

I love fujis tactics. “Im not going to enter the crowded FF market but instead build apsc cams that are smaller and lighter then FF and still provide awesome image quality... oh also if u like large sensors we have MF not that baby FF shit.”

Can I just say kudos and thanks for the video, it is nice to see the audience numbers back where they should be :)

Oh yeah and I want a photo bag with built in speakers playing the Mount Alliance chant whenever I reach into the bag :p

I shoot Canon. The interesting thing is with all the cameras that have been announced recently, I like the Fuji and the Panasonic the best based on the specs. Still have to see the reviews ans sample images but they seem better then the Nikon and Canon for a mirrorless system.

$2395 and $3695, if the AF holds up this is the strongest offering on the market. No other FF mirrorless system has proper weather sealing and dual card slots.

Sony made the "Basic body" that better than "Revolution model"
Panasonic are making "not for video camera" that have a 4K 60FPS
lol

Here is a point that should be considered...Sigma being part of that "Alliance" Should have direct access to the Lumix S series mount framework and produce "native" Sigma Lenses for the Panasonic. This could be very good for Panasonic and bad for others without great lense options.

I went Panasonic for video to add to my Nikon D750. Panasonic makes amazing cameras. Dual IS is a game changer. The color science introduced in the G9 is very pleasing. Many times I just crop the jpeg and I am done. I shoot raw plus fine jpeg. The D750 is a fine old camera but the touch screen and interface is so much better on the Panasonic. Nikon glass is over priced (2850 for a 70-200.) Bring on the Tamron G2. The fact that there will be native Sigma glass is huge. No worrying that Nikon will kill a perfectly good Sigma lens with a firmware update. A lot of Nikon users use Sigma glass because of the price to performance ratio. If Sigma stays true to form, then there would a huge saving on switching to full frame mirrorless. Even using native Nikon primes the auto focus on the newer Panasonic’s is better in low light than either of my Nikon’s, a D750 and a D7200. The Nikon’s will front focus in incandescent light. Yea I know it is the old mirrorless vs dslr discussion. The Nikon Liveview focus on even the D850 is not good in low light. The Panasonic does a great shooting video in low light.

I am still watching Sony and waiting for third party zoom development for the E mount. The Tamron 28-75 F2.8 is very compelling. But the Sony lens line up is big, heavy and expensive and in fairness is excellent glass. When I travel I need two bodies, I am really leaning towards an A7RIII and a A7III for redundancy..

Anyone else really like interface and refinement of Panasonic? I am afraid of what I have seen of the Sony menu system. All settings are easy to access on the Panasonic touch screen (even in bright light).

Look forward to them being added to the dpreview studio comparison webpage! (e.g. D810 dslr raw is still brilliant for pictures, and a bit more affordable than it was)

the question is how good the DUAL IS will be. Can it be as god as in GH5 on a full frame sensor? and what about the autofocus. Will it be as bad as in GH5? We'll see

As a heavy investor in Panasonic M43, but who is also looking to move from my 5D Mk III to a mirrorless full frame, I welcome this entry. I was going to go to the Sony A7 III, but I'll just wait until the reviews for the Panasonic come out. I can wait another 6 months or so.
