Ask around and you can probably hear about a friend of a friend who successfully tipped a cow while out in the country late one night. The story generally recounts participants having a few alcoholic drinks before driving to a cow pasture and setting upon a slumbering bovine.

A friend of mine tried it once while I was watching. He asked me to lie later when I had to take him to the hospital for his broken leg. He got a good running start and hit the cow with his shoulder like he was playing football. The cow just looked at him and mooed in a very pissed tone, then got up and chased him to the fence, where he got his leg hung up on the barbed wire on the way over and in the attempt to free himself, twisted the wrong way which led to the broken leg. Over the next seven weeks while in the cast, everyone who knew him took great pleasure in mooing at him each time they saw him. True story. Over 30 years later now, and every now and then I'll still give the occasional moo when I run into him. He just shakes his head, says a quick "mf" under his breath, and we both have a good laugh. Good times.

To me and my juvenile friends living in a small rural town in the 80s, going cow tipping was always just a euphemism for being out and about after dark and the assorted mischief we would plan on getting up to.

My local city sometimes has cows grazing within the city limits. Some students, when drunk, have been known to attempt to ride these cows. When asked, the farmer said he wasn't worried about the cows, he'd be more concerned about the people trying to do the riding.

When I was in high school we used to go out at night and pick psilocybin mushrooms from the cow fields, found out the hard way that farmers carry shotguns and aren't afraid to shoot at people trespassing.

My little corner of Texas surrounds me in horse, cattle, and a variety of other animals and, to my knowledge, none of my neighbors has ever had an issue with anyone sneaking onto their property to tip any form of livestock. Honestly, were anyone to do so would very much be risking their life as livestock don't like to be bothered while sleeping. The closest was a couple of kids playing Pokemon Go and that was during the day. They ended up not hearing my neighbor and walked into the side of a Texas Longhorn. The reaction of the bull was a glance before going back to grazing. The reaction of the kids... Screaming and running away. The reaction of my neighbor... Pure laughter and sharing the story with all of us.
