So, what do you think... could you live on a generation ship? Yes? No?? Maybe..?

Imagine reaching Alpha Centauri after 1000 years travelling in a generation ship only to realise someone else from Earth got there first only 1 day earlier, using a FTL ship which took them 20mins to reach Alpha Centauri from Earth...

I have always contended that the first generation onboard such a ship, those who had embarked from Earth, would have the toughest time of it. The crushing monotony and sameness, the pressure of the ever-present threat of danger, the same faces day after day, year after year, and the knowledge that they will do this and nothing else until they die...all of this would contribute to that embarkation generation having the hardest go of it. Succeeding generations would know no other life, and so would have the advantage of having no frame of reference to compare the liabilities of ship life to the relative advantages of Earth life.

I remember a sci-fi story about a generation ship that had traveled from Earth for 1, 000 years. After reaching the destination world, which was very similar to Earth, and disembarking, everyone started complaining, things like "Wind!! Water from the sky!! The sun... so bright!! Plants have overgrown everything!! It's hot!! It's cold!! Dirt everywhere!! etc. etc. and on and on until finally they all returned to their generation ship and left, preferring to live on it which they had grown so accustomed to.

A few things of note; Generations in, the new people that are born on the ship will are not likely to "miss earth" or long for walks in the park. They simply never grew up with one. They grew up on the ship and don't know any different. So, they'll be fine. Also, it's not called anti-gravity. When cylindrical force is used to create a gravity effect, it's called artificial-gravity.

What if there was a psycho in the ship, should they kill it?

You know, the biggest change that will happen on a generational ship would be the culture of those on board. Instead of being able to pursue your dreams, you would have to have some basic skillsets in every generation, so rather than simply choosing a profession, you might be allotted a specific duty. To handle the boredom, you would also have to have a good entertainment group on board, as they would have to make their own entertainment as they travel. This, along with cross-training in other specialties, you would also want a good R&D division, as they would still want to take what they already know and try to improve things. The irony is, you may arrive at your destination with skillsets and knowledge that is completely new and different from when the ship initially left our world for the next. You would also want a good investigative division so that they could document their travels and any possible discoveries made along the way. Essentially, they are explorers and while things could get monotonous, as you move further and further away from Earth, you would have an opportunity to explore further and further into the cosmos as you travel. On such a large scale endeavor, it is almost as important for ship maintenance and functions to having something new to do or to learn. This is why I think that they would have to include the ability to explore and to create new entertainment while on the journey. It would be interesting to see how the end product would turn out from such a generational ship.

We already live on a large generation ship. Need some more mechanics though, we seem to have a bit of a carbon dioxide problem.

This reminds me of the old 70s TV series "The Star Lost". You bring up many interesting points about life and living aboard a generation ship, but there are a few things that I think you missed. One is the possibility that the planet you were heading to doesn't turn out to be as hospitable as your predecessors had hoped. As difficult and stressful as life aboard your ship would be, the dashing of hope at the end of such a journey would be worse. The other issue that is not mentioned is the shear number of generations that would be required to make the transit to even the closest star, not to mention the time and distances to stars with potentially habitable planets. Interstellar distances are just too great. Even if there were no apocalyptic tragedies that would endanger the ship and everything went smoothly, the ship would have to be so large, so complex, and so well-equipped as to be able to literally recreate itself as even the most solidly-built pieces and parts would accrue wear and damage just from "normal" use. Time is our enemy here on many fronts.

It is my opinion that simply based on the economics of such an endeavour, even if we were fleeing a planetary doomsday scenario it would make more sense to build an extremely large fixed habitat in our own solar system where we would have access to raw materials, relic materials (even from our own dead planet), and the advantages of not having to carry them with us on an extended journey. Plus regardless of how big a generation ship would be, we could produce a fixed habitat that was much larger, held more people in greater comfort and safety, and had more amenities and capabilities for the same cost of effort. For that reason alone I don't feel that generation ships are viable. Just my two cents worth...

Anti-gravity??? I think they meant “artificial gravity”

If the thruster shut down, it wouldn't be that big of a deal because of momentum. An object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by an outside force. Now, if the reverse thrusters failed, that would be a huge problem, because then the ship would be unable to slow down. The ship would be hurdling through the galaxy with no brakes.

Imagine being born like 10 generations in and there’s still 10 generations to go. I wonder if it would suck or if it would be normal

I don't understand why it should be such a strain to live in a community of 500 or maybe a couple of thousand people. And also - given the size that the ship would have to be to offer viable life conditions - why the space should feel so confined?

Moving freely around in several parts of the world is truly a modern phenomenon. My great-grandmother lived on an island in rural Norway that is 25 miles to drive around along the coast. And she never got off this island! But as far as I know, her life was as fulfilling as yours or mine.

And no doubt this was the case for most people living more than a couple of hundred years ago. It was rather like the normal thing to never go anywhere far from the village you were born in or out of the valley where you had always been living.

And from this comes that you also did not meet very many people. Living in a big city myself, it is a fact that in, say, a week I see more people than the average person in medieval rural societies would see through their entire life. Surely, people aboard a spaceship would be able to adapt very well to this.

And why would there be no childhood or retirement? Surely, there would.

Imagine traveling in those ships for generations and people from Earth future surpass them coz they have more advance, technology it would be like finding a time capsule...

I think travel through worm holes or bending space time to arrive nearly instantaneously would make more sense then decades of travel and not knowing if help would arrive should there be major mechanical issues. Perhaps teaming up and starting commercial relationships with others (here or from other worlds) who have already figured this out would be the best option. Peaceful relationships from country to country are shrinking our world as ideas and inventions are shared via social media. No doubt the same thing will happen in this galaxy and beyond. Are you prepared for change?
