My uncle and his best friend died on an oil rig. One fell out of the basket while doing repairs and the other dove in to save him. Both were lost at sea 😞

Humans are crazy....just to be able to build something like that out in the middle of the ocean is impressive

My dad is a head medic on a rig, a couple hundred miles south of Grand Isle, Louisiana. He works 14 on & 14 off, and is actually out there right now. He gets back & forth via a badass helicopter..

One of those rigs probably feels secure as hell when you first get there on a nice calm day. like this comes along and you start rethinking your life choices.

I see a lot of folks talking about what would happen if you fell from one of these. Let’s see here, a fall from 50ft- 15 meters is the point in which injury can and most likely will occur. So let’s say you fell about 45 ft into the water. You probably have some internal injuries and most definitely some sprains or worse. Then on-top of that the waves are about 35 ft high maybe higher, at that height that’s enough force to knock a man out cold. Enough battering from the waves could kill you. Let’s say the waves aren’t doing the job. The average temperatures for most seas in winter months are typically between -22 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit. At those temperatures you can survive up to about 18 minutes. What happens is your extremities start to lose circulation. You’re oft literally cuts off blood flow to your arms and legs to conserve core temperature. This makes it near impossible to stay afloat. Now let’s say you manage to stay afloat. Eventually you’re innards will begin to shutdown due to lack of blood flow. Ultimately resulting in death. By the time you hit the water you are pushed out too far for help. Your coworkers can do nothing but stare and hope your death is fast. If you cannot imagine the size of these waves, I suggest you look at a 7 story building. That is the size of a wave coming down ontop of you. And there are bigger waves all the time. The sea is unforgiving yet a beautiful mystery. Any man that works on an offshore oil rig can tell you it gets scary especially in the winter months when the weather is downright dangerous and unpredictable a lot of times. Hope this helps some of you.

#1. Is a self propelled Rig.. they can say in operation/ drilling in up to 30 feet waves.. self propelled means they have 4 propellers to hold them in place in extremely deep water where no stationary rig can be set up...when moving to the next location they can move up to 12 knots

I worked on a rig out there for 2.5 years. The power of the sea is awesome...especially when experienced first hand.

The energy of the ocean... The water skimming slightly above the waves at 6:06 is so beautiful. The music is so lovely. It has a feel of the sunset and a time long ago. The song after that is beautiful, too.

I was out on seas like that out on the North Sea just west of Trondheim, Norway in 1978 as a passenger on the express mail ship. The ship was getting tossed around like a toy, and you couldn't walk normally. You had to cling to something, and if you wanted to move, you had to wait until the ship was level and then run to the next thing to cling to. But the crew wasn't the least bit worried, and so neither was I. It was actually kind of fun. The waves sometimes rolled right over the whole ship. Nobody was stopping you from going out on deck for some fresh air, but obviously doing so would have been suicide.

“ oh bugger” cracked me up. Keep the music, very different and not distracting. Uplifting sometimes other times realizing how big the sea is, the music conveys...distance? Solemn acceptance maybe. Made me feel like what if waterworld happened?
