We have to remember that this season is inherently different for a number of reasons and therefore hard to compare, but the biggest thing I think people are missing is that we met Simon and Daphne in episode one of their story, which was told in eight episodes, total.

Then Anthony’s story was told in SIXTEEN episodes total (it isn’t a full story for him without his loser season one self), Kate’s in eight, and their joint story together in eight.

Now, we are picking up in what is the 17th episode of Penelope’s story, the 17th episode of Colin’s story and the 17th episode of their relationship story.

I think that’s a big reason why they moved it forward one season, because since this is the one story that features two main characters to the series at large, they are always technically telling their story, so they would have had to tread water with where they went with it for another eight episodes.

Also, as someone who lived a best-friends-to-lovers relationship, I really related to how anticlimactic everything was until suddenly the switch flipped and they were ALL IN and KNEW they were all in. When you have that kind of friendship from the time you’re teenagers, you DO file everything that happens between you and every thought and feeling you have about each other into the “friend” category. Your brain works so hard to do it without you even noticing.

Everything that Colin feels compelled to do for Pen in the first 2.5 seasons comes from a place that he calls friendship - and it totally could be. But if he felt compelled to be the same way with someone newer in his life, he would automatically be more introspective about it and question what he was doing. All of the rules he always breaks with her are like he and she have existed since before the rules, like their friendship is grandfathered in. So that gives him mental permission to accept more and more intimate stuff as just “anything that happens with me and pen is our Friendship, because me and pen are different” (“You do not count.”).

I fully believe the show runners when they say most of the swoon worthy stuff is still to come. Like I said, when this stuff happened to me, most of the change was internal and like being a frog in hot water, and most of the outward stuff had us both going through the motions continuing to call it friendship. But then when we had the “courage to ask”, we both fell HARD and got ridiculous and intense immediately. Because then it’s VERY easy to just take that whole FRIENDS filing cabinet and slap a new label on the whole relationship with all you know about each other and all your history and already feel a deep and passionate connection and not even feel weird about it.

This is him realizing the deep intimacy he was searching for was already there, fully built and ready for him to just jump its bones. 😂
