The infamous “level 256 glitch” was a bug that plagued the original arcade version of the Pac-Man game, due to both hardware limitation and programming error.

Fun fact this video was stolen
It even had the same fake donkey kong arcade endings (it would have been impossible for DK to squish Mario and in the footage you see a bit of squashing in the sprite which is technically impossible on the arcade board and the other one has had no coding for)

"Nobody even knows why this happens"

Bro I watched a full documentary on this by retro game mechanics explained they did an amazing job explaining it.

In flappy bird, at least in the footage he showed, when mario jumps onto you the gold pipe stops moving backwards, so if you managed to avoid mario, you'd be able to get through

The infamous “level 256 glitch” was a bug that plagued the original arcade version of the Pac-Man game, due to both hardware limitation and programming error. As the name implies, it's a bug that happens when you reach level 256. The original game used only a single byte or 8 bits to store the level number.

I love it when people say "nobody knows" as a shorthand for "I didn't bother to look it up"

First of all, we do know why that glitch happens in pacman. Lvl 256 is actually lvl 0, 0<7 so the game tries to draw all fruits from 1 to 0(256), since there are only 20 fruits and not enough space in bottom right of the screen the game starts filling the screen with junk data. Also since it is lvl 0 if you could beat it you'd get to level one and restart the game.

Yeah, we do know. Nes and Williams Arcade hardware were both built off of 8-bit systems. 8 bits of binary (1s and 0s) can store any number up to 255, so when it got to 256 the place in memory that stored the level number overrided into the previous memory slot, editing other data, and making the Nes or Williams Arcade system you were playing the game on load seamingly random memory slots. To know more watch Retro Game Mechanics Explained's video about it.
