On this day, November 14th, 1840, Claude Monet was born in Paris.

Monet, a French painter, was a key figure of the Impressionist movement that transformed French painting in the second half of the nineteenth century. He led the way to twentieth-century modernism by developing a unique style that strove to capture, on canvas, the very act of perceiving nature.

The term ‘Impressionism’ comes from the title of his painting ‘Impression, Soleil Levant’ (Impressionism, Sunrise), which was exhibited in 1874 in the first of the independent exhibitions mounted by Monet and his associates, as an alternative to the Salon de Paris. The title of Monet’s painting inspired art critic Louis Leroy to use the term Impressionism for the very first time.

The painting that first brought recognition to Monet was ‘The Woman in the Green Dress’, painted in 1866. It featured his future wife Camille Doncieux, who we encounter in many of his paintings including ‘Women in the Garden’, and ‘On the Bank of the Seine, Bennecourt’.

In 1893 until 1926 he painted his vast landscape project, which depicted white lilies, found in his garden. This would become the subject of his best-known works. The series, known as ‘Nympheas’, consists of approximately 250 oil paintings, painted by Monet during the last thirty years of his life.

Ο Claude Monet γεννήθηκε στο Παρίσι σαν σήμερα, 14 Νοεμβρίου, 1840.

Ήταν Γάλλος ζωγράφος και ένας από τους σημαντικότερους εκπροσώπους του κινήματος του Ιμπρεσιονισμού που κατάφερε να διαμορφώσει τα δεδομένα στον τομέα της ζωγραφικής στη Γαλλία μετά το δεύτερο μισό του 19ου αιώνα. Ο Monet είναι που άνοιξε το δρόμο στο κίνημα του μοντερνισμού του 20ου αιώνα, αναπτύσσοντας μια μοναδική τεχνοτροπία αποτύπωσης του φυσικού τοπίου στον καμβά.

Ο όρος Ιμπρεσιονισμός προήλθε από τον τίτλο του έργου του Monet, ‘Impression, Soleil Levant’ (Εντύπωση, ανατέλλων ήλιος), που εκτέθηκε στην πρώτη έκθεση της ομάδας των Ιμπρεσιονιστών το 1874 στο Παρίσι. Ο τίτλος του συγκεκριμένου πίνακα είναι που ενέπνευσε τον κριτικό τέχνης Louis Leroy στην χρήση του όρου Ιμπρεσιονισμός για πρώτη φορά.

Ο πίνακας «Γυναίκα με πράσινο φόρεμα», που ζωγράφισε το 1866 και απεικονίζει τη σύζυγό του, Camille Doncieux, ήταν που τον καθιέρωσε. Τη σύζυγο του αποτύπωσε και σε πολλά άλλα έργα του όπως το ‘Γυναίκες στον κήπο’ και το ‘Στην όχθη του Σηκουάνα’.

Για να γιορτάσουμε την επέτειο των γενεθλίων του, επιλέξαμε το έργο «Ο Σηκουάνας στο Jeufosse κοντά στο Vernon», 1884, Λάδι σε μουσαμά από τη Συλλογή του Παρισιού της Λεβεντείου Πινακοθήκης.
