Crystal Clarke reads an unusual letter to the US draft board

In November of 1943, desperate not to be forced into military service, a father of seven asked his wife Cassy Murdoch to write a letter that would prove that his family needed him at home. To read the letter that ultimately forced him into battle, here is Crystal Clarke (originally read at the Royal Albert Hall, London in 2019).

My dad served in the Navy in WWII. He spoke about a southern man who had a wife and eight kids at home. He joined the Navy because it was the most money he could make to support them.

In 1918 in Indiana, my Grandmother refused to tell the draft board she needed her husband to run the farm!! She could run it by herself(and did along with raising 8 children and teaching school)!!!! The men at the draft board just wanted to give him the "Farmer exemption" but she was one determined woman..he finally got the exemption when the preacher spoke up..in German! My Grandmother was furious that America was fighting in Germany ..
