I was 17 years old when this song was released. My father was in his final weeks of a 4 year battle with terminal cancer. This song just spoke to me at a time when i needed something to help me deal with losing my best mate and hero. 30 years later i still have a tear or two when I hear this song. Masterpiece And saviour for a young me!!

For me David Gilmour is the greatest guitarist and vocalist ever. Pink Floyd the greatest band ever!

We won't hear music better than this in our life. Gilmour is the modern day Beethoven.

As I get older in life (62) and time seems to go by faster and faster. I was really lucky to grow up in an era of such great musicians and song writing .

David Gilmore is one of the greatest guitar players ever. Not the fastest or most technical, but his feel and instinct for note choice are unmatched.

Youtube decided to put a publicity interruption in the middle of David's electric solo... I really don't have words to describe how traumatic that experience was. Just wanted to share my pain and hate.

I remember me, a 22 year old, shedding tears with my dad listening to this song in the car… No other song hits my soul like this one.. Thank you David

This song is a masterpiece. My favorite song of all time. I was 16 years-old when I first heard it and just fell in love with it and it's taken me nearly 30 years to truly understand the lyrics ("...leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground...to a life consumed by slow decay", "...looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us...to a glimpse of how green it was on the other side") . I now have a 16 year-old son myself. He recently heard me listening to the song and said, "Who's that? It's really good." I sat down with him and told him how much the song meant to me and told him to listen to it again 30 years later to see if the meaning of the song grows over time for him too. I can only hope he'll be telling my grandkids years from now how much the song means to him...and his dad.

The slide guitar followed by that acoustic finish breaks my heart every time. Pure magic to touch a soul this way.

David Gilmour is more than a rock legend, he is a Psalmist, an acoustic poet, genius.

What’s sad is when all these guitar gods are gone, there will be no one left to replace them 😢

Without a doubt, the finest slide guitar performance I've ever had the privilege of listening to. Of course, it makes perfect sense. It's David Gilmour. Hypnotic and truly beautiful.

The slide solo in this song is undefeated. So soothing.

I am a 67 year old guitar player, playing since I was 8 years old. I have grown up with Pink Floyd, and grown older with David. I have recorded 156 songs, 10 of which are covers of songs he has written with PF. I have 61 guitars. So I have lived and breathed guitar music for a lifetime, really, and few have influenced me as much as him. When Jeff Beck died, I literally wept. When David's time is up, the world will have lost one of its most important lights. It will forever be a darker place. And I will be inconsolable.

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun

Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut?
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The nights of wonder

Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world

Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river
Forever and ever
