If it's not too late, I'd really like you to make that syncthing video. I use it all the time at home and at work, it's such a versatile tool, you can use it in very creative ways. And the fact that it's all peer to peer and end-to-end encrypted out of the box is just perfect.

I would love a video on this! Last year, my friend was asking me about a software to use for backup or something like that, so I looked that up and found SyncThing so I recommended it to her without ever using it myself. A year later now, I asked her for a recommendation on how to backup when I don't have a hard drive and she teased me as to how the fuck I forgot a software I recommended myself lol. I've been wanting to use it for a while but I'm too lazy to read the docs and set it up

Syncthing is great for keeping files synchronized between systems, but not for backups. If you accidentally delete a file, or a file gets corrupted, or you get randomewared somehow then it will sync that as well.
I use syncthing for files I want on all my computers, with one machine pushing those files to external drives with rsync (one weekly, the other daily) (Timeshift would work well too, but to only a single drive).

Yes! Ive been using and loving syncthing for years. It's just so easy to use and setup, it just werks. I'd love to see a dedicated video about your use case of it!

In my experience, it does work well on large directories as well. I use it to mirror one of my 1TB drives which currently uses around 180gb.
So I just set up one side as send only, the other as receive only, and any changes on the drive gets synced to my file server (You can use file versioning too to protect against accidental deletion).

Another benefit is the more nodes you have connected with a copy of the block being copied, the faster it copies (similar to torrenting).

Would really like a video exploring this further. Have started using it myself in the last few months.

Yes, please... a video on this. I've been using syncthing for a few months locally between several computers and the only issue I have is when filenames are not valid on all operating systems, that's an expected problem though.

I usually use rsync for copying and such for big folders. It's very fast and you can copy only the new files too

I have ST on my NAS. I actually use it for large folders with 10+ years of RAW images, the key is that you have to break down into sub folders and not a giant parent folder. I have my photos parent folder broken up by years and i have the year folder setup as a sync folder, if i tried to sync the larger photo parent folder it would fail.

I'm using Syncthing as part of my backup strategy. Since my laptop's ssd is quite small, I set up a sync folder with my desktop pc. So I archive the target files with tar, rsync them to the Syncthing folder, and once accessible from my desktop pc, I transfer them to a secondary hdd. Much better than using usbs. If there's one thing that Linux sucks at, it's reading and writing to usbs!

Yes, please do a video. Also, is Syncthing the best option to sync two data HDD on the same PC? ie or is it best only for use over a network?

I use syncthing to sync my NixOS configuration, and home directory between my desktop and laptop

It is cool, especially since it has flatpak as well. Unfortunately, I also want to use it on phone and there isn't a selective sync option, so I chose to use the proprietary Resilio instead- which allowed me to finally cancel my OneDrive subscription while still having a way to access the work documents I have while outside and backup my photos. It's a shame that Syncthing abandoned the work to make selective sync a thing...

does it sync with windows too? I have some windows PCs in network too
