Good advice. I got a computer science degree from a public university in my state. It wasn’t exactly cheap, but much less than out of state private schools. I paid off student loans within two years.

I’d love to hear a bit about how and when you guys studied for your certifications. Do you feel they were worth it? Currently studying for the CPA.

This makes me thankful i work and chose accounting as my career path... there is so mhch work out their for accountants at all levels. I finished a masters degree 65K in debt but have a solid career field and once i finish my CPA i should make about 60K starting here in Orlando Fl.... and im 30 so my career choice should easily pay off.

I just recently turned 40 and am actually heading Back to school😳 I have had several Major life pivots over the past few years that have been the catalyst for my decision. Having been mostly in retail management my wife and I both strongly agree that it just doesn’t fit our lives the only way to get out of nights and weekends seems to be a new career path. But Thankfully!! I am currently working at Starbucks and they will pay for the whole degree (except for books and supplies) without Any obligation. I am going to start in October and will be working for a Bachelors in Software Engineering and a minor in Sustainability. I’m Very excited and it’s been fun to get my old brain working again!😂 Glad that it will be a debt free process!

The problem is that people equate education with college, there are many ways to educate yourself these days, you might not get a degree but you'll be educated and being educated is always worth it

I changed my major quite a few times. I decided to go for an associates in accounting and math. I want to be a bookkeeper and a math tutor on the side. My income will double and I won’t have any debt since I’m going to a community college. I’m staying away from debt like it’s COVID 😂.

I admit that my main goal in college was to have fun and avoid the responsibilities of the real world for a time. I took way too many loans because it felt like free money. I ended up with a degree in Marketing and could only find a job in sales or retail management. Fortunately I had taken some computer programming classes and was able to eventually get into that field and have a successful career. Still, it took until I was 30 to get a decent job because I wasted so much time in college.

Lots of people erroneously envy those that obtain and even promote the pursuit of athletic scholarships. What a joke. The preparation and time needed are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT! It will effect your performance in the Classroom. So much so that I NEVER took classes for my Major during the Season. Many Coaches will actively discourage or outright FORBID you from taking certain majors because it'll "take up too much of your practice time". I too was sold this idea as a Teenager and in fact was recruited by Nebraska and the rest of the Big 8, the Pac 10 and most schools west of the Mississippi. I ended up graduating from Junior College without playing one down of Football or 1 Quarter of Basketball while having spent COUNTLESS HOURS IN COLLEGE PRACTICING FOR Let's not forget the 2 staples in my bone the doctors had to use to put it back together and the ENDLESS MONTHS of Rehab. My left leg is nowhere near as healthy as my right one.
I know DOZENS of fine athletes that NEVER MADE A DIME PLAYING SPORTS! Further.. I know retired Professional Athletes that have to work regular jobs now because contrary to popular belief, not every Pro Athlete gets a contract like LeBron or ever makes more than $4 million dollars, even today.
I had a friend in Jr HS, that was SUCH A SHARP KID!!! Mrs. Petruzzi, our English Teacher would teach him Spanish during ENGLISH CLASS! Fast Forward 35 years. He's a Partner at a Law Firm, Graduated from UPenn/ Wharton Law School and received his JD from Univ of Michigan Law School. I don't pretend to be a "legal expert" but one of the Obama Daughters went to Univ of Michigan for the same thing so I imagine it's pretty high ranking. I think it's very unlikely that his parents had the kind of money necessary to send him to those schools. I didn't ask him but my guess is that he qualified for ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS.
Don't waste any time feeling bad for me.. I have an A.S. in Electronic Engineering Technology with a Specialization in Microprocessor Interfacing. When I was in HS I took Algebra, Geometry, Chemistry, Trigonometry, Typing and Physics. I make more money than lots of people with Bachelor's Degrees.

I somewhat wish that I had considered community college for my first two years. But I didn't end up in a bad situation. I had about 28k of student loans at the end in Decemeber 2019 and got a job in my field. Now I have gotten it down to about 8k with plans to pay minimums one I pay off the second to last loan.

I will say that while having a plan in advance is ideal, if you're unsure of your direction, going to college for almost anything is better than not going to school. While most don't land in their field of study, the very fact that you hold that bachelor's degree not only helps you gain easier and more lucrative employment, but once you do decide on a direction, colleges tend to offer accelerated courses to get that degree in your preferred field fast.
