Zzzz, to make it more simple you need to turn the mixed numbers into a improper faction and then add/subtract/multiply/divide
The fractions!! How? You need to multiply the big number with the bottom number and then add the numerator (the top number)
Thanks for reading and good luck 🍀👍

Why do you sometimes repeat words or sentences Sal?

The second problem is a different method if the numerator is not smaller than the denominator. 1 1/5 + 2 4/8.

My son says: Thanks for your help, but I'm a bit confused about the first word problem. To solve it, I converted 2 1/4 and 1 5/8 into improper fractions by multiplying the whole numbers by the denominator and then adding the numerator to the product. Then, I converted the first mixed number (which was now the fraction 9/4) to be of the same factor as the second mixed number.

My result was that I got 18/8 and 13/8. But when I added them together, I got 31/8 or 3 9/8, NOT 3 7/8.

I don't understand the concept of order of operations, (since math is certainly not my forte.) and because I think that has something to do with this, I'm confused.

Does this mean that the way I converted the fractions is incorrect? How can I simplify this problem?

I was always taught to use the "lowest common multiple" which is 2. Two goes into both 4 & 8. But you used 4. I'm a little confused.
