That my friend is called a daisy chain

For homeowners (less useful for tradesmen) If you start at the middle, rather than the end, you can unwind only as much as you need while keeping the rest braided.

While I'm smoking I just put the extension cord in a 5 gallon bucket

That's called a daisy chain.
The purpose is so it doesn't tangle up and when undoing it just pull the end that you ended with and it will undo itself. If you're on a roof just hold the end throw the opposite end over and it'll completely undo by itself take about 2 seconds.

So instead of a 50ft cord, I have an 8ft daisy chain that I still have to hang somewhere...? How can I make this easily storable?

Used that method for many years. Coiling climbing rope between pitches or even at the end of the day using this method is also a good way rather than around knees or doing oval coils by hand. If you "weave" from the loop end it makes it easy to pull off enough from a fifty or sixth foot cable to have plug and socket reach just 12 feet say without uncoiling completely. Doing the same on a round coiled cable can lead to inductive heating/overheating without uncoiling fully (especially on a drum)!

The only thing with this method is you have to undo the whole thing if you want to use any of it.
