So a great video. Excellent information in an efficient edit with no vertigo inducing camera movements. It is actually hard to find great DIY videos like yours here!

How deep do you place the 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 behind the top flange elbow?

One of the reasons why I liked this vid was the speed. I want info fast and correct! Thanks!

Very good video. How far back to you set back the cross wood for the valve and the shower arm? Is there a standard or recommended setback?

Good video thanks. I have had bad results disturbing/moving soldered joints too soon after making the solder joint. For me they tend to move out of alignment or even fall apart because the solder hasn't cooled and is still molten. My advise to beginners out there is to solder it and leave it alone for a few minutes, let it cool on its own until the solder hardens. Also if there is any water at all in the pipes it will not heat properly for soldering, use a shop vac to suck it out or you can stuff some bread into the pipe to damn the water back, don't worry it works really well and it will wash right out. As shown in the video clean all parts well, I even clean the solder. And don't over do it with the heat or the solder, a few seconds after the solder starts to melt and flow is enough heat, stop heating, you can still add solder for a second or so after. If the solder drips you are using too much - a common mistake. Off topic but regarding copper pipe, avoid using it and if it's 30 years old or more in your house consider replacing it. Copper type M is thin and starts to get pin holes, type L is better but I would not trust it to last for ever.

Man... Jeff. When I'm watching the videos so many details come up & are covered that I would of NEVER thought of!! It's great to watch all the videos on YT that showcase super cool looking tile but, there is so much that needs to be done prior!!! Your guy's videos are great man!!! Keep on keepin on!!! Dirty Jersey out!!!

This can be done without any copper or soldering at all but using only pex if you use drop in elbow fittings for the shower faucet and tub faucet. Just secure the drop in fittings to your studs, that is what gives your spouts their strength. Then run the pex to the valve. The “must use copper” comes in play if you don’t have the valves secured to anything. We been doing it this way for years and never one issue

It looks like there is a straight to stud shower walls being installed. If so how far did you measure out the faucet

You should warn people specifically to not put pex between the valve and the tub spout, only ever have one elbow in that line, and to place the valve so the tub spout is between 6 and 11 inches from it. Otherwise water will come out of the shower head when the tub is filling. Specs per hard-to-find Moen spec sheet.

Does that black plastic have to stay behind the wall?

What determines the depth of the valve? Is something expected the be smooth with the final layer of tile? My install will have backer board then tile.

I am a beginner using PEX and I really needed help cutting the hole and mounting the shower valve.

Is it safe to use tile backer screws on copper pipe clamps? If the bracket scraps off the coating as the screw is tightened, then you would have just put steel against copper which is a no - no.

If you were installing a shower only valve, would it be ok to use pex up to shower head fitting since it's screwed to blocking?

question ....how do you determine how deep I need to set the shower valve if I'm going to tile my walls...

Moving back into a home that was almost completely rebuilt after a tornado (left me homeless for two years) so it has all new showers but none of them are done right. The guest shower is the only one that even partly works but there are a lot of problems there too. Heck, the problems start before you even step in with vent fans blowing to nowhere and non-locking closet doors on every bathroom!

First, it looks like “Moen Caldwell 1-handle Single Function Square Shower Faucet Valve Included” with a tub spout where you pull up a plunger to divert to the shower, which works but water also comes out of the tub spout at the wall. That’s not really what this is about though. Something is badly wrong with the shower/blend valve, like maybe it’s not the right thing at all.

The handle is oriented UP and flows when you turn it either way, meaning it stops in the middle. It flows cold when I turn counter-clockwise and blends hot when I turn it clockwise. The blend is backwards so it comes out full hot but then tapers off to warm as I reach the clockwise limit. What is going on back there?!

I can tell they used solder without even looking because there was a big drip stuck to the tub.

Whoever rebuilt this place did absolutely everything wrong and this is the only slightly usable shower. The master bathroom is also brand new and yet the shower drain appears to be full of expanding foam! …and inaccessible through the grate they installed. :( Sinks don’t drain either. Light switches are wrong. Most outlets and smoke detectors don’t work. One light switch doesn’t work unless another is on and you then can’t turn off with the other, etc, etc, etc. It’s a total nightmare, but I’m hoping you can give me some direction regarding that one shower valve so I can explain what is wrong.

Big ask, I know, but thanks regardless.

Can you turn the water on before installing the handle?
